    Question How durable is the B6 S4 4.2l V8?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
How many of you have a B6 S4 V8 with over 100k or even 150k miles out there with out any major engine problems? Saw some threads and about 9 complaints on catastrophic enging failure due to the timing chain tensioners and/or guides. Repair costs at Audi dealers ranged from $5k to 7k! Love my 04 S4 but wondering how long it is wise to keep with 86k miles on it now. So far the car has needed a front wheel bearing, multiple ignition coils (thanks to Audi for finally doing the right thing with the recall!), 2 window regulators, AC compressor, new rotors all around, windshield wiper mechanicals and a drivers side valve cover gasket.

I've got 87k and my audi is running excellent (/me knocks wood). From what I've read, if you take care of the engine/maintenance it will pay you back. Make sure to do all scheduled maintenance and nip any small issue in the butt immediately. Don't let it turn into a large or major or bank breaking issue.

Also, if you are able, try and log some of your own wrench time - it'll bring you that much closer to the car =].

Anyways, to answer your original question, I plan on putting another 87K on my engine! No reason why I can't reach 150K or more. The body is in great shape and its a blast to drive.

Also sounds like you've had most of the common issues treated as of 85K.

    nearing 130K miles

    no *major* problems

altho I've had it up to my neck in small maintenance issues that can and do cost 5X more than if something major were to go wrong on other cars
I'm most likely going to be selling soon

Ive seen lots guy with 100+ miles get rid of the car due to the 130 mark needing to do the chain and guides.. thats the majic mark. if you look at the blocks its teh guides that start to go but the tensionsers are something that needs to get replaced. If you want to keep the car past the 130 mark. you should really think about doing the chain and guides.. Thats what the 130k service calls for

I think that means the 130k mark the magic spot for doing a built motor with boost or spray haha. I just hope we got some solid info on building our motor by then, I've got about 2 yrs before I'll be close to that mark at the pace I'm going

I was thinking the break was more right at 150K. That's where I had noticed people's motor's kicking the bucket......well guides&tensioners at least
