My friends was driving his 2003 S6 yesterday and the timing belt snapped....95K miles. Has everyone replaced their timing belts are the recommended mileage...?

Has anyone else on this forum experienced having their timing belt break?

I've seen a few t-belt snapped post around here in the last few weeks. I think dealer calls for 100k'ish t-belt replacement, but that's always going to depend on how the car was treated over it's life. Driven hard, shorter lifespan on ware parts like the t-belt. It's kind of a crap-shoot to be honest.

more than likely didnt just snap. Most of the time an idler seized up and much too much torque on the belt witch causes the break. 75k miles is typically the max that those parts can go. Anything over that then it is really a ticking time bomb. I am not sure if Audi Of America will help out with anything seeings how it is before the 100k.. IK that they started recommending the 75k intervals, but im not sure when. Good luck! It would be worth a shot to check with them.

Any idea what else was damaged when the belt snapped? Can't be good.
I changed mine at around 68k on my 02 S6. Never had a belt break on me with an interference engine. Good luck!

OUCH! time for a new engine. Rarely does it snap, what typically happens is the belt will shred over a few revolutions, meaning instead of the cams just stopping they go through all combinations of valve timing relative to the crankshaft essentially guaranteeing that every single valve gets bent, and worst case valve heads will snap off and bounce around in your combustion chamber.

If you need heads/engines I've got a few S6/S8 engines at the shop.

i changed the T-belt on my buddy's allroad when he bought it with 160K and the orginal belt. the belt had a hole in the center and was starting to shred...

I think audi recommends changing the belt around 120,000 miles........no fool should wait that long. My indy told me to change my timing belt as soon as I got my C5 S6. Because of what Scotty@Advanced said, I believe it is time for a new engine. My indy told me of a customer who had a timing belt go, and the Audi dealer wanted 12K to rebuild, and the indy wanted 8K........the guy ended up taking a sawzall to the car.........

Wow that sucks.... 95K is pushing it from what I understand from my Audi tech. But not that far over. Likley it has been pushed alittle harder over its life then the usual... Im haveing my t-belt done tommorow. Im at 145,000miles. I was told it was done around 100k but I have no proof. figure I might as well just do it and know its done...

99% of the time, when your timing belt actually breaks with the engine running, you're talking bent valves at a minimum, possibly replacing pistons.
Like Scotty said, time for a new engine or forking over for a rebuild.

I had a belt snap due to yours truly over tightening the tensioner roller... The carnage was 12 valves, but it was a clean break. Also when valves contact the pistons the top ring land can get crushed and cause the compression ring to seize meaning a new piston for that cylinder, assuming the ring doesn't break and score the cylinder wall.

Had a buddy's SRT-4 snap the head off of an intake valve 1/2 way down the quarter-mile track once. Nothing to do with the timing belt, but man, you want to talk about combustion chamber carnage....

    Timing Belt

just had ours done last month at 73K. It needed some other work done too so we just did that too. I like the car too much to chance it. This thing runs like a dream.
