Does your rear hatch spoiler clear your roof box when open?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey Guys,

My B6 USP avant hatch spoiler touches my roof box when the rear hatch is open. I have the Thule Atlantis 1800 roof box and it sits as far forward as I can get it but no luck, it still touches, and I have the OEM cross bars. Anyone else with a similar issue? Any crafty fixes? I had thought of notching the roof box but I'd like to leave that as a last resort.

This is not my car but it's virtually identical as far as the way the box sits on the car.

    TIA

i install my roofbox with the hatch open so that i can sit the box as close to the hatch as possible without touching. Mine doesnt touch but i also dont have the 1800 series box.

What about installing the soft side of velcro to the box where it hits the hatch? Soft material so it doesnt scratch the roof spoiler?

^^^^Thats what I do. Although it moves the crossbars off of the ideal and proper mounting position, I don't think it makes a huge difference. Just don't overload it thats all.
Old enough to know better... Young enough to do it again, just getting harder to recover.

That's a good idea, and I already did that with foam tape but the other problem is that the spoiler gets tweaked or bent a little as it presses against the box. I'd hate that doing that repeatedly might warp, damage, or loosen the spoiler. And I've tried to move it as far farward as I can.

I install the cross bars at the dimples on the inside of the roof rails. I could try moving them forward a bit.

yeah you can def move the bars further up. Those dimples i think Audi put there as a reference point for the factory roof rails. I move my front one forward of the front dimples cause i like to have the sunroof flap open. Less wind noise.

It is a very tight fit. There are 2 positions on the box mounts and a little bit of room to move front and back on the roof bars. My box sticks out over the windshield. I have one of the half width long boxes so I have room for 2 bikes.

Easy, trade me for my non-usp spoiler, problem solved! black car right?

If you can't move it forward, I'd stick a piece of foam on the box, maybe the type that is used on door/windows for sealing out air. I don't think the "ideal" location markings mean very much if you have less than 100 lbs in the box.

LOL I know, but it looks pretty much identical, Mine is just a stock USP Avant at the moment, and I have a Koni FSD/Eiback Pro Kit going on in the spring. This is my car...

I use to have the 1800 and you definitely have to move the bars more forward in front of the dimples. The front mount was almost to where the rails curves down in the front and the box slightly overhangs the windshield in order for it to clear the rear spoiler. I got the 1600 now and it fits better with no overhang and the box easily clears the hatch spoiler.

I have a Thule mountaineer and also put it on with the hatch open. furthest forward gives an inch of clearance. I have Thule aftermarket bars which gives a little more leeway.
