    Car wont start after sitting

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, for the past couple of days, in the morning when I go out to start the car, it doesnt.....it cranks but doesnt turn over, the first time. Then i count to 5 or 10 and try again and it starts...a little hesistent but i give it a little gas and it starts.

check engine light is not on, every else works fine except for starting the last few days....and yes it has over half a tank of gas.

    Thanks

It only sits overnight, so basically about 8 to 12 hours depending what time I have to leave in the morning/come back from work the night before

Go to an advance auto and have an electrical system test done for free. I'm assuming either the battery is almost shot or you have a drain that kills it over night.

that was my first thought but the more i think about it the more i think its unrelated. The car doesnt sound like it has a dying battery, just sounds like its having a hard time starting.

x2 Go to your local auto parts store like advance auto to have them check to see if your battery or alternator are fine first before you start looking for other things. If you have cash sitting around under pillows etc , and hate non-audi guys touching your car, go to the dealer and they can do the same thing. The reason I agree with bigblue is change in temp.

Sounds like it's fuel related. The pressure might be low. The next morning, open and shut your door a few times to cycle the fuel pump before attempting to start it. It will make a sound each time it primes.
Your lights and dash aren't dimming when it cranks and just cranking shows that the battery is decent. Dying batteries will crank very slow then just have a lot of fast clicks.

I think it has to do with the cold weather. I had this same problem last year and I'm starting to see signs of it again this year.

come to think about it, i was in my home town of Montreal over the weekend and thats when in started on Saturday. Then Sunday was warmer and it started right up. Then today back in NY it was a little colder early this morning and gave me a hard time.

Is there anything I could do to help during colder weather? Its only the begining of colder weather to come and I need to make sure my car starts

these cars are notorious for cold start issues but it usually ends up turning over on the second try without issue. doesnt sound like a battery issue i dont think.

How's the weather? If it's changed drastically cold it can start to gel up the battery resulting in a harder start. Pretty sure the only solutio would be to get a dry cell battery

It always starts, just on the second try. going to work in a little so it will have sat for about 12 hours. and I turned everything off before shutting the car off last night to see if that will make a difference.

Or buy a new battery. In the past three days I've changed 38 batteries and done like 60 tests. This cold weather ruins batteries, especially when theyre old.

Mine would turn over but wouldnt start. It was actually the low pressure fuel pump. But when it went completely bad it wouldnt start at all....

Stop talking about the battery, its not the battery. Our cars do have cold start issues, specially if you go BT with bigger fuel injectors with a custom tune. There really isn't much you can do about it but you can go get some new spark plugs with a colder value to it, I really hate having it not turn over the first time, its almost embarrassing spending so much money on a car that cant start the first time when its cold. Also daudic touched on priming the fuel pump before starting and i agree but you dont have to open the door a few times, just let the pump prime for a good 30 seconds to a minute. As you open the door you can hear a kind of high pitch noise which is your fuel pump, just put you key into accessory for a half a minute and see if that'll fix your starting issue.
Selling Nogoro blue Alcantara door panels. Will fit b6/b7 a4/s4/rs4. In great condition, originally wanted $600 shipped but dropped price to $500 shipped. Check my classifieds for pictures. I want these gone, will include extra door clips if requested. PM me if you want pictures of them installed or anything else I want these gone so make me an offer and we'll talk.

X2. Turn key to on, but don't start until after you hear the pump stop making noise. This will usually help it start on the first try, although it still might struggle.

If the car is higher mileage, it is possible that a fuel filter could help out some. I am beginning to think that might help me...as even though it seems cold to me here, it's not THAT cold in SC...
