    B7 3.2L Oil Change DIY

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Now I am sure that the 3.2L isnt much different for an oil change but I have not seen a DIY for it. So...... ENJOY!!

    TOOLS:
Flat Head Screw Driver (Big one for the screw tabs holding the splash guard on the bottom, small for the plastic rings you replace in the filter)
    Wrench
    New Filter (From Audi)
8.1 Quarts of Oil (whatever you choose)

    TIME:
    20-30 Minutes

    So, Here we go!!

I chose to use ramps, but you can easily just jack up the front as well. If you use jacks, please use jack stands! Also, all you need to do is jack up the driver's side as the drain plug is on the passenger side.

Next, get under it and unscrew the tabs, there are several.

Remove the splash guard, pull backwards and it slides right out.

Remove the filler cap to allow for easy flow of the oil.

Remove the drain plug, on the passenger side.

Drain oil, now be careful, this really shoots out there!! Caught me off guard.

After all the oil drains, and this takes awhile. You need to remove the "decorative Cover" to get to the filter.

After the cover is removed, the filter is in the back.

Just a slight twist with some grips.

Remove filter, good idea to put a paper towel by it as a little oil will spill.

Remove the filter from the cap, it just takes a slight tug.

In the cap, you have to remove one of the rings, which an extra should be supplied with your new filter.

Also the one by the hole for the filter.

New filter just snaps right in.

Add whatever oil is your preference, I just used what Audi recommended.

    Button her back up!

Now to get rid of that "SERVICE!" notice, hold the "wrench button" and turn the car on (not start) and then once it is on, release the button and hold the "0,0".

    ENJOY YOUR AUDI!!

There are a few minor steps I excluded, like replacing the washer on the drain plug and obviously tightening it back down.

**This worked for me, I will not be held responsible for any one else' Audi.

Great DIY. I almost thought I was staring at my own car. I'm a recent 3.2 owner and I was hoping for a DIY. Thanks for this!

As directed above, but a minor difference for my car was oil drain was black and faced directly down. Don't ya just love that way your car feels with fresh oil...

Just a small tip. When you go to remove the filter instead of a paper towel but a ziptop bag over it. Close bag, properly dispose of filter.

This was mentioned in another thread, but the "Engine oil capacity with filter change" is WRONG in the manual and Audi recently mailed out a manual correction. Manual states 8.1 liters. Beginning of this excellent post also erroneously states 8.1 quarts. Correction states it is 6.9 quarts / 6.5 liters. Hope none of the DIY folks put in the 8 quarts in the past. Overfilling is a no-no.

There is a VIN split for the B7 3.2L guys.

    2005: 8.1qts
    2006+: 6.9qts

if your oil pan is black and drain plug bolt faces straight down, it should be 6.9qts; at least that's how it is on my car.

Excellent write up! Good job taking the shot of the oil draining out of the pan. Question: is there a specific oil that one should use? I bought some Valvoline synthetic that meets VW 502 00 guidelines but don't know if that brand is recommended.

FYI. Mine is an '08. Black lower pan, bolt into the bottom. I had eight quarts of oil, and used 'em all.

Thanks again to the OP...made this much easier. For whatever reason, the service reset procedure isn't working. Documented the same way in the owner's manual, so the problem is obviously between the seat and the dash, but it's pissing me off. :)

nice write-up and photos. I'm sure it will help our V6 brethren.
I am a little surprised though that you use a 5W-40 oil in a V6, especially in Michigan.
I'm sure it meets the requirements but a 5W-30 might perform better in a non-turbo engine.
Also, if you remove the oil fill cap after removing the oil drain plug it may not splash out as much, at least mine doesn't.

Hey guys, this might be a stupid question, but i was wondering how you ensure you don't overfill. Do you just measure out exactly 8.1 quarts before pouring in the new oil?

    Thanks

I normally add a bit less than the required amount then top off by checking the dip stick. Then I get it up to operating temp and check it again. Not a v6, but same principal.

    Good write up.

A tip for next OC. Insert OFC to the OFH. Then fill OFH with oil. This will prevent a dry start-up after an OC and instant oil supply to the valvetrain.

Shown on a TDI engine, similar concept for other engines.

I'd recommend using the appropriate socket or wrench for the filter housing instead of vice-grips. Those things are expensive to replace. I believe the 2.0T is 36mm, not sure about the 3.2L.

    Oil Filter Socket (36mm)

Many Audi/VW models house the oil filter cartridge in a plastic oil filter housing that requires a 36mm socket to properly remove it without damaging the housing. This compact socket is used to properly remove the black plastic oil filter housing. Made by Metalnerd, specifically for the latest Audi/VW models.

I read the whole DIY. Great info!

This is not a cheap out question "on my oil filter" as this DIY is 10 years old.(I'm happy to buy an Audi OEM oil filter)

I see that the OP listed the filter option as OEM from Audi, I am fine with that. I just want to ask the question, have we the Audi forum found any other filter bands that we are happy to use? I would think offerings from MANN: (probably the OEM spec) and BOSCH would be at a high level = to an OEM option?? But if not, and 3.2 cars only find that the dealer filter is the best, well then I'll buy dealer. Just looking out side the box after ten years?

I've even seen some other options like Wix and K&N both known to make quality filters.

Maybe a list for this DIY? All expectable filters on the market:
    #1 = Audi OEM
    #2 = xxxxxxxx
    #3 = xxxxxxxx
    #4 = xxxxxxxx
    #5 = xxxxxxxx

..... and good luck with fram

I use Wix filter very high quality. Never an issue. Also get the pump and remove the oil through dip stick opening. No need to drop belly pan or be under the car. Worth every penny if you do your own oil changes. I have a 2005 3.2 and it’s worth it to not go under car. I go with Amsoil European 5w-40, the wix filter and at 131k miles my silver fox is all good.

I'm not due for an oil change yet, but I do have a oil transfer pump on the way from amazon to test. I'm mainly just sparking some questions. Hopefully they are helpful.

Yeah, always good to seek addtl info. Audi’s are very finike with their parts and fluids I have used Wix filters for years on all my vehicles and have never has an issue. I did fuel filter, got the Audi part instead of aftermarket. Same with fuel cap.
