Blackstone Lab Report - Shell Rotella T6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
You can see a few of my reports there... The latest oil is Shell Rotella T6 as noted on top, and by the looks of this report I'm sticking with this from now on. You can't beat the deal, and it looks as if it's working really well. Filter used was a MANN filter.

In the comments I specifically asked them to see if there were any traces of contaminants from running the water/methanol injection, and as you can see they report nothing is found in the oil.

Nothing better than a healthy checkup from the Blackstone Lab doctor!

Advance Auto - Exit 6. I never ever go to that other scary place off exit 8 haha.. Cheap too. It's always on some promotion. You buy it by the GALLON since it's a domestic brand not a european brand, so you buy two gallons and you'll have some extra.

I changed it. I personally have done oil changes at no more than 4K on my car since ownership. People freak out all the time about it, but I don't rack up miles that insanely fast that it's absurd.

Your viscosity numbers are looking excellent. I love getting a clean bill of health from blackstone. Right more I'm testing the results from running 5W-40 to 5W-30. Once I get the results back for the second run I'll post my findings as well.

I can say one thing. if you look under my oil cap on the audi that has had 3K oil changes, VS my VW that the previous owner did 5-6K changes with god knows what oil.... the amount of dirt and deposits in the VW is disgusting.

the audi barely has any varnishing built up on the splash cover let alone in the valvetrain. the vw is just coated in shit.

That's very true but I don't think he is looking to extend his oil change intervals so for him this is a good choice. Personally, I am using castrol synthetic for my testing with 5k internal changes.

Besides me always doing the oil changes at 3K, this oil was in there since the beginning of June because I wasn't able to drive my car much over the summer commuting into the city. The car sat a lot and didn't rack up too many miles, and on this oil change was 4 passes on the strip at Waterfest.

Answer below.. Just how I've been with this car since ownership and it's been crazy reliable, so I'm not changing it up to save any money. I rack up 3K miles in about 3 or so months, so what the hell is 50 bucks!

Totally... I hate that Autozone! Right now and for most of my oil changes I have actually run the Purolator PureOne filter from Advance. I have read in articles that the filtration on that filter is awesome. However, with my latest addition of an OCK from VAST, I didn't like the way it fit on the new t-stat housing so I'll probably end up going back to the stock size MANN filter.

:-) so lets see you ran your car flat out for 1 minute(4 passes) and you think oil is toast...I just changed my oil (50/50 mix of redline 10w-30 and 10w-40) couple weeks ago..it had 4000 miles and 7 track days on it..each track day is about 90min of track time so that is 630 minutes of mostly WOT in 4-7K rpm range..I sent sample to Blackstone as well and only metal that is higher in my report is iron @ 16 ppm. today syn oils are much tougher than many of us think.

for street driven car on good syn oil even 5K oil change is pretty conservative..my $0.02

Old post is old, but... I'm scared to death of this oil. I had a B5 2.8 (128k)... ran Seafoam thru the vacuum lines.. so that could have caused some wild issues as well. Car sounded and ran like a dream.. started using T6 and drove across country from Colorado to Tennessee. Put around 3k miles on the first oil change. I had to drive back to Colorado and was worried what the stress of what the long drive did on the oil so I change it before I drove back to Colorado at around 3,200.

After a month being back home in Colorado the car started knocking. You could hear it from the cabin. I'm sure there were other factors, but this oil scares me being a diesel motor oil to begin with.

"Oh btw, did I say a month? Good because that was the month we did the Pikes Peak Hill Climb...25 times a week..."

I'm hoping you did an oil changer AFTER the seafoam treatment... if so its just bad luck. T6 is a dream come true. Rebuilt my motor like 2k miles ago. First 500 on dyno oil and then straight to T6. Been "beating the shit out of it" ever since. I'm more worried about the KO3's at 20psi than my motor getting pissed.

Are you sure youre using the correct Shell Rotella? T6 is not a diesel oil, just a 5w-40 heavy duty full synthetic.

I've used this in my own cars for years and over 100k combined miles (2 vehicles) plus I use it in the oil changes in all european customer cars. I trust it. I think you just had some bad luck or something else was at play with your engine. Sorry to hear that.

Lets see, I've only used it for the last 5+ years (mobil 0w40 before) change it twice a year in my stock turbo 2+ 125k S4 (owned it 11 years since 26k chipped since 30k). Only thing I have noticed was it cleans the yellowish/brown varnish of the internal metal parts well:) I use it im my vette also with a 383 N/A stroker making 500whp with a track day mixed in (oil temps hit 302 at one point). I don't recomend letting oil temps get this high, but shit happens and you don't want to quit running :) It's been good to me.

That's the funny part... I looked at two different jugs of Rotella T6 the other days, old design vs new design, only to see a slight difference where older one said something like "Heavy Duty Diesel engine oil" while newere one says "Diesel and Gasoline engine oil"... what do you make out of that?

my car loves to eat oil.. put in t6 last sept..... and had to top it off but ive also fixed a few oil leaks, mainly a busted o ring in pvc and tightened a few clamps where oil vapor was leaking..... my q is, how is your oil consumption with the T6....? For my next oil change I was thinking about goin to m1 10w-40 to reduce oil consumption, or a m1 10w-40/T6 blend, or straight T6.? any thoughts.. on these three specific scenarios? Thanks everyone.....

If you're doing regular 2-3k mile oil changes you might as well just use regular oil, I don't know why people make such a big deal.

T6 has old and new package designs, oil is the same. Basically Shell realized that tons of people with turbos were using their Diesel Truck oil, so they changed the packaging. Oil is still the same. He may have been referring to T5 when he said "truck oil".

M1 shears down to a 0w30 very quickly, so you will have fewer leaks if you stay with the T6, since it is slightly thicker.

schaeffer's supreme 9000 is what I've been using for a bit with seemingly excellent results. Time to send mine off to blackstone.

I've run the T6 Synthetic, and i'm currently running the 15w40 diesel oil (got it for practically nothing). Dino oil or not, the 15w40 makes my motor nice and quiet.Since i have some leaky valve stem seals it also reduces the smoke, And my oil temps stay lower than 5w40..But that's expected. Considering my motor is at 140k. Doesn't matter what i run at this point. Shes getting rebuilt this summer anyway

I would be very careful with running a 15w in the winter. You said you were rebuilding this summer anyway, but that is way too thick on start-up to be using in PA in the winter.
