So can you add navigation to a 2009 Audi A4 that doesn't have it?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I bought my Audi A4 in 2009 and did NOT get navigation. Does anyone know if you can actually buy it aftermarket to fit right where the screen is now? Or is that impossible b/c the car doesn't have the buttons already in it. Has anyone tried this? Instead of a garmin, etc.

    Thanks all

    Mike

It is pretty much too complicated and to expensive to be feasible... You have to completely install MMI...

You have to install the nav components in the trunk, replace the head unit in the dash, change out the screen, add the MMI buttons, and rewire everything for fiber MOST...

Roger - DavidB8 has a wiring harness he picked up for a few hundred $$ iirc. That is just the basis, the 3rd gen MMI is the backbone of the Nav system, its not just a head unit replacement.

My suggestion - get a nav program for your smartphone if you have one. If not, just get a Garmin unit.

    Yes! U can!

I have done the mod on my A4 with an after market Multi Media Interface
You can add an after market Media Interface eg like XCarlink.

    http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/product.ph...3&cat=4&page=1

The media interface will sit between your Symphony/Chorus/Concert HU and the stock OEM LCD screen.
The cable going to the LCD screen will be plugged into the after market MMI.'
The after market MMI will come with a similar cable to be connected to the stock screen.
With the after market MMI U can add a host of items for eg. Garmin GPS GVN53, Reverse Camera, DVD Player/Changer, Digital DV, etc.
Changing of the different screens i.e Stock Displays, GPS, DVD, Digital TV, etc. will be as if like oem by pressing & holding the Mode button on your steering.
The only thing U lose will be your auxilliary input.
The auxilliary input will be the sound input(DVD, Digital TV) from the after market MMI to your sound system

For better resolution for your Garmin GPS GVN53, U need to make a RGB cable to connect to the after market MMI which provide a RGB input for GPS Navigation.
The GVN53 will come with a Radio Hz Remote Controller - IMHO though clumsy in the beginning but will be a breeze once U get used to it.
The GVN53 will come with an external speaker and provide the sound for Navigation. In this way U can still listen to your radio, CD, DVD while on the move.
The GVN53 takes a SD card for your Garmin Maps

    https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=10573

The reverse camera will be switched on to your stock screen whenever U reverse.
Any after market reverse camera can be fitted - They are usually in NTSC format.

Here are some pictures of my installs! Hope this helps!

    The Garmin GVN53 Black Box size is small 4.7"W x 1.18"H x .4.6"D

The GPS antennae located on the left hand corner of the windscreen. Heavy tinting of your windscreen might have to locate the antennae outside your ride

The familiar Garmin GPS Start Screen

A typical GPS Map View - Turn by turn & TTS (Text To Speech) Available. GPS Audio is by it's own speaker box. This way U can still listen to music with the stk system
& still has GPV Navigation at the same time.

Digital TV reception & picture quality is pretty good especially on the highway even at high speed.

All screen changes on the MMI is via the Mode button on the steering wheel
    On my setup the screen changes OEM **> Garmin **> AV1(Dig TV) **> AV2(DVD/USB) **> AV3(iPod/iPhone)
Reverse cam is turn on by reverse gear regardless of what screen U are in.

Digital TV reception & picture quality is pretty good especially on the highway even at high speed.

Reverse Camera from Alpine - Picture quality actually looks better than in the photo - Very clear

iPhone/iPod Dock - charger & capable to play music through the car stk sound system or play movies thru the MMI.

Playing Songs or Movies from USB drive that came with the DVD Player

    @kepiting1sg

Thanks for the very useful information.

Did you tried to install touchpanel and connect it to GVN53?

On the display from reversing camera from Alpine I can see that there are 'guidlines' on the display itself. Does moving the steering wheel has an effect on those, and how is the camera connected to the system?

Also when you say that you change what is on the display with MODE button on the steering wheel, are you talking about original mode button or some addon? Also, how is that button connected to the aftermarket MMI?

nono, I bought an xcarlink adapter, which allows you to use you stock Audi screen as a monitor ex: dvd plater, tv, back up cam... using component wires the same you would on a regular TV. I bout the apple av cables and connected my iPad to the carlink and now what ever I see on the ipad is displayed on the car screen. works perfect. i watch movies (when parked) use the ipad navi to get to A-B, installed a back up cam that turns on as soon as the car is in revers... a worth while mod for your car, if you spend a lot of time in it...

I have one with touchscreen. total cost was $650 plus for Touch Screen NAV + Reverse Camera and additional 150 for DVD player.
you can search a thread on it (it's from Germany. I know about 3 others on this forum who have installed it).

I did install myself and although it took few weeks to get everything worked out, it was not that hard to do. And I prefer mine over xCarlink because I can use my screen as a touch screen (you have to place a glass sensor which is taped on top of original AMI screen but not noticeable)
    2010 Audi A4 B8 Premium Plus.
Current Mods: LED Interior Conversion. LED License Plate. Hoen Xenon Match Fog Lights.
Trunk Lid Spoiler. Chrome Grill Inserts. Hardwired Valentine 1. VAG-COM. E-codes Headlights, Touchscreen NAV / Reverse Cam / DVD Player.
Glossy Black Plate Delete. Gunmetal S5 Rep. 245/35/19. ST Coilovers.

    Hi,

I just got an audi A4 2009 and I'm looking into installing a nav system like the one you described. I have so far not been able to find a solution that supports touchscreen and I was wondering if you could let me know what system you used. A link, model name/number, or any information you might have to point me in the right direction would be great. Thanks.

    @overjagi:
This device is pretty good find... I'm using xcarlink+viseoo bluetooth+garmin gvn53, but the one you listed costs much less and provides much more...

If you have troubles with the iGo maps, you can always install Garmin software on the Windows CE based device..

I know this is an old thread but just found it. Is there a way to dock an android phone to the xcarlink so that way i can use that as my GPS?

    Tons of Thanks

Tons of Thanks for the information.
I just got 2015 Audi A4 without Navigation system and any other features. Kind of disappointment sent in with empty screen for no use.

This gives me a great relief. I will try.

    Thanks

I'm in the middle of installing a similar unit. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it was getting power so I reinstalled the original, but now the original display won't power up either. All the fuses look fine. Any tips?
