    I am on the Fence Please Help 2010 s4 vs 2007 RS4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, I am on the fence between the New S4 and 07 RS4.

Reason being is like the power of the RS4 but it takes a lot of cash to get very few hp/tq gains.
While the 2010 S4 to get quick gains (intake exhaust chip) without going broke and has a killer look!

    Pros of Rs4
    -Power
    -Looks great
    -Great handling

    Cons - Rs4
    -Older look
-Lots of $$$$ to get good power gains
    -Kinda "yesterdays news"

    Pros New S4
    - New "Look"
    - Cheap power
    - Great looking Interior

    Cons New S4
    -NOT a RS4
    - Not as fast to start off with but don't worry I will Mod. I have the Mod Bug
-Handling and Braking are not up to Par

What do you guys think i should do. I am going to pull the trigger on one of these bad boys soon. I just don't know what one to get??!?!

SHHH!! dont tell the BMW boys I have had two e46 M3's in past and i am now switching to the "dark side"

    MY OLD M's

S4 for sure. I really do think it looks better. and i believe it is already performs similar to the RS4 (and you can make it even faster), and it has sport differential.

Actually the S4 is quicker around the track than the RS4... the quattro is even more sophisticated and has that awesome sport differential. Power wise, they are about even.

You can pick up a loaded S4 for just over $50K, or a used 3 year old RS4 for a couple grand more... might as well get the newer, brand new car.

S4 all day dude, I am in love with the RS4, but this new B8 is a beautiful canvas, it really just needs mods for it to shine, and when it does... it does so well. Take blake P's car or some of the other guys on this forum who have done it up right, and they compete with the RS4 so well

    My favorite RS4

    My favorite S-line/S4/A4

Get the new car - You will be much happier, plus I have heard of a guy who had a B8 and had to sell it due to financial reasons and bought a B7, he had to get rid of it because he hated it comparatively and now is driving a Lexus until he can get back into a B8

I had the same dilemma and i'm also coming from a E46 M3 and i choosed the S4 for the simple fact that the RS4 is kinda dated, altough it's an awsome car. But the B8 is fresher and easy to get up to speed as you said with chip etc. But in the end it's all up to you of course :)

    Nice M's btw ;)

New car, warranty and 0 miles is better then a 4 year old car, little to no warranty and a car that was most likely driven hard.

having a b6 and a b7 and now a b8 I defiantly say the b8 platform. All the other platforms are so cramped and this is the first model year with a useful backseat. Plus the new engine platform has so much hidden potential and is already as quick as the rs4 is stock form.

I was the same way. Actually had a deposit down on a leftover 2008 RS4 in late 2009, (think the car had 600 miles and 39 months left on its warranty) about 4-5 months prior to ordering my B8 S4. The RS4 was absolutely beautiful, and the sound was amazing. Car really felt very special. However at the end of the day I couldn't see spending M3 money on a outdated body style. There were also very few tuning options, all which were just to expensive to justify. Finally, the carbon build up engine problems, and the overall maintanence costs on the RS4 were so astronomical that I decided against it

I love my B8 S4. The car actually feels faster then the RS4, although the sound is somewhat anemic. I think the interior is definitely not only sharper but also sportier then the RS4 and you can't beat the sports diff. There are also so many tuning options for this car. I plan of giving myself the factory backed Stasis ECU upgrade and exhaust for the holidays. Even after the upgrades my S4 will have cost less out the door then the RS4 and it should rock anything with 4 doors other then a CTS-V and maybe a C63. It will definitely be an M3 eater!

That being said, both are amazing cars, and the RS4 does feel a little more special when you crank up the engine. The day of big V8 powered sports sedans is coming to an end, and if that's what you want go with the RS4. IMHO, the S4 is however a better all around car with more tuning options.

i came from a highly modded rs4 and can easily say go for the s4. while ill miss my rs4 with its raw power, theres just something about having as much power in a whisper quite car that with just a little work will be a beast. its far more comfortable with coilovers than my rs4 was and just all around a more pleasing car. tho not as predictable as my rs4 in handling situations but maybe thats cus i havent put on my sway bars yet. go for the s4

I think you will be better off with the S4 for most of the reasons already mentioned. Since you seem to like to mod your previous BMWs, the S4 has a lot of potential. Chip, exhaust and pulley Plus some new wheels will give you a sick car! Probably as fast as an M3(when chipped) but a much better daily driver. Better gas mileage than an RS4 even with mods. BTW, I thought BMW was the "Dark Side"

Make sure you test drive a unit with either the Sport dif or ADS. It makes a big difference.

S4, for all the reasons listed above. But the one thing I didn't see mentioned was perhaps one of the biggest "pros" in my mind. I still remember when I heard an RS4 for the first time. That lovely gurgle of a V8, even just at low speeds, then as he got on it a bit pulling away. Not enough to offset all the other pros that fall in the B8 S4's side, but man that engine/exhaust note is beautiful on the RS4.

S4 all the way. I have owned them all and the new S4 is hands down the best. It not only has the best looks, IMO, but it will be the new B5 S4 in terms of performance. 450awhp will not be hard with this car very soon. That's why I just ordered mine last week ;)

RS4 is better in looks and sound only (it is gorgeous though...). But, inferior in every other way, and the prices are still ridiculous for what you actually get. B8 S4 FTW!

Drive both, thats what I did. The RS4 did feel quicker stock and I love how it sounds but it is a older car and you don't know how the previous owner treated it. In the end I went with the B8 S4 nd I don't regret it at all.

btw nice wheels on your black M what kinda wheels are they?

I almost bought an RS4. I loved the widebody look, but everything else is just outdated vs B8 S4. Prices are still unjustifiably high, not to mention the carbon build-up issue and the leaking suspension problems. It's really a no brainer.

I'll just add a couple of things that have not been said. I sold my RS4 this spring and have an S4 on order.

    RS4:
    Build quality is higher
    Sound is awesome
    Rare, exclusive
    Issues are well known
    Carbon robs power insiduously
    Great brakes
Need to be perfect on clutch/throttle
Mirrors suck, stereo sucks, road noise higher than average
Needs Stasis suspension to handle the way it should

    S4:
    Moddable
Below average exhaust sound (even with aftermarket)
    Great tech package
    Handling great as delivered
A better DD (torque, mirrors, quiet cabin, tech)

i had the exact same dilema as you. when i went to place my order for a b8 s4, i had the option of getting an all black rs4. i can take it home that day instead of waiting for 3-4 months. all my friends were trying to convince me to get the rs4 and drive it home that day. but i said no, i wanted the b8 s4 instead

Ive owned several Audi's and Ive driven a few RS4's more than once.

The RS4: All around it "feels" like a more expensice car. Everything about it is higher in quality. It feels solid and planted on the road. Something about it just feels magical. It looks amazing and it sounds so too. There arent many things you can do to mod it unless you buy a supercharger and Ohlins supsension from Stasis. Exhaust made a big difference but beyond that a chip isnt going to do much. If you found one under CPO and just wanted a really nice, fast car, to just roll around in and go fast at teh occasional track day or canyon run, go for it. Its a sweet car.

The S4: More expensive than a used Rs4, but its new with factory warranty. Very fast, very tunable, feels very nimble. It probably handles better than the RS but it doesnt feel as planted. Also, its noticably cheaper than the RS or the B67 S4's. It doesnt feel cheap, just not as refined in comparison. It looks fine, but looks really good with spacers / drop / aggressive offset wheels.

I am not an advocate for the older cars. The main issue is that you may be happy with it now but what happens in 3-4 years when the B9 comes out. You may not be as happy with a car that is 2 generations behind. I actually like the B8 interior more than the B7 (I owned a B7 S4 convertible). It seems more user-friendly and has some great features that I missed in the B7.

On the other hand, the RS4 does have a lot of raw power. It is a well planted car that is comfortable to cruise in but handles spirited driving very well. If you are planning to keep it for a long time though, you have to consider warranty and what the overall cost could be if something were to happen in a few years.

End of the day, a new S4 with a $1500 APR tune is just as fast as the RS4 if not faster and you would get a new car.

I completely Agree with both of you guys Thank you!
I test drove it Yesterday and Feel in love.
I am putting my money together now so by the end of next month there should be a new white on black 6speed manual S4 in the stable. :) Cant wait!

Once you get the car practice going in slow and booting it out of the corners. Most BMW drivers take the AWD Audis into the corners too fast then complain about understeer. Going in slow will allow you to put the power down much earlier. Takes some time to adjust as I came from a RWD car also and initially I thought I had bought the wrong car because it understeered like f#ck. Then figured out with some help that I was going in too fast.
