5 star security torx bit - tamper proof - what size? where to buy?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I want to buy the 5 star security bit to make it simple when removing my MAF for cleaning. Does anyone know what size torx bit it is, and where can I buy it. Preferably looking for local auto stores or dealership, as I plan to do some maintenance this weekend. Does Autozone, Pep boys, WalMart or Salvo carry this bit? Part numbers or links would be great, Thanks!

Its nearly impossible to find one. I had to get one off of the local tool truck (MAC tools) . I went to all the local places and the 5 star is what you can't find.

I replaced the MAF security torx screws with 5mm X 0.8 mm X 20 mm long SS button head cap screws. Uses a 4 mm Allen hex to remove/tighten. Home Depot has them.

A pair of vice grip pliers will work to remove the screws from the MAF then just replace them with the screws mentioned above. Probaby a simpler solution.

I used vise grips also. Those screws are only lightly torqued.

Use a dremel to cross score the screw. That allows you to use a Philip or flat head screw driver.

If you don't want to get the security torx, just use a very small flathead screwdriver. It will work great.

Once you clean MAF (likely why you need it), replace it with two phillips head screws. Take one of your 5 point S-Torx screw to compare at your local hardware store. Or you can use similar screws if you have screw jar full of random screws. You should use two that are the same though.

I see that the posts here are 6 years old nonetheless they were very helpful to me. I had difficulty removing the Torx Screw from my 1995 Ford escort because one of the screws had that plastic epoxy on it. Initially I found the Torx Bit socket/drive at Napa for $5.00. Then I pulled the casing off that the MAF was attached to and chipped and picked away at the epoxy/plastic that was covering the head. Then I went to Ace and sized the Torx screws and replaced them with stainless steel phillips head screws. After cleaning the MAF I cleaned the throttle body. I have say I was skeptical about what these cleanings were suppose to do but it made a noticeable difference in the way the car runs, idles and accelerates. Thanks to those who posted how to remove the screws and suggesting to replace them with regular screws. I would have never thought of doing this. I was ready to get rid of this car but now I think I will keep it for a while longer and make more modifications like putting a cold air intake on it and modifying the exhaust system.
