exhaust leak causing the car to stall?

could an exhaust leak cause the car to stall? the flex joint ripped open and the call doesn't idle for shit now. once moving driving is normal according to my fiancee, i haven't had a chance to drive it.

vagcom it had some misfires so just for the hell of it i swapped the coils out of the tip to the 5spd, didn't change the idle.
there was also a lean code but it did not come back after clearing it and letting the car run with a few revs.

she needs the car today, hoping it doesn't blowup.

An exhaust leak at the flex joint shouldn't affect the idle. It will only make the car noisier. You most likely have a small vacuum leak somewhere.

Sounds more like a vac leak and/or broken check valve or suction jet pump. An exhaust leak at the flex pipe would just be loud and probably annoying.

your exhaust could fall off at the turbo and it wouldn't cause your car to shut off.

I didn't think it would affect it but it was the only noticeable thing i could find and wanted to verify.

    Oh, it is.

again, this is what i though, just wanted to verify.

Thanks everyone. I'll check for leaks, clean the MAF, and change the plugs.
i hope that napa has a flex joint in the right size so i don't have to wait for it to be shipped, then i can get it welded in tomorrow.

I think a full check valve replacement on both cars might be the next project.

    * been a bad few weeks though, on the tiptronic the front suspension is making an awful clank when hitting any bumps - don't know what i'm going to do about that yet, prob put on some koni struts and springs, maybe a lower cost coilover setup, we'll see. won't be for a couple months anyway.
    * it's now dumping coolant out the turbo return line (replace the feed line last week), don't have $200+ for a set of braided lines right now so i'm just using some 250deg rated coolant hose from napa, hope it holds up being that close to the turbo. going to fix that up tonight.
    * and i noticed oil leaking in at the valve gasket on cly1 this morning when swapping the coils from one car to the other. valve cover is easy from what i hear, that will prob get done later this month or next.

the 5spd has this new exhaust issue, the idle issue, a clunk going in and out of 2nd gear (only second from what my fiancee says), and need to install the O2 sensor i got for it.

just sucks trying to do all this in the driveway with limited tools.

I'm in the same boat with you as far as bad flex pipe. I'm having no idling issues at all. My flex pipe is completely gone basically at this point, not just cracked/split.

just got a set of spark plugs for each car, the flex joint for the exhaust on the 5spd, and some more coolant hose for the tiptronic.
now to find a shop that can install that flex joint tomorrow (and hopefully not have to remove the downpipe to do it). The exhaust on the 5spd was pretty shot so i put my oem one from he tiptronic on it and had a guy weld it up for me, was only about $40. hopefully i can get this done in that price range or a little more do to the location, the flex joint was $69- at napa.

just took a peek at the car and you can clearly hear hissing from behind the engine. the F hose going to the pancake valve has a huge split down the side of ti so that's the first issue, but the hissing is coming from a little bit lower and toward the driver side of the car. it was way to hot to stick my hand back there and feel around.
