Possible to retrofit s-line steering wheel w/airbag to regular a4 b8?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

I've been doing a lot of research lately after buying my 2010 a4 premium plus w/navigation and sound (it's an auto tiptronic model with mmi 3g), and i would like to begin down the road of retrofitting parts. I've got the Bentley manuals coming for the b8 as well as the ross-tech cable, and while most of my experience is with the computer side of things, i successfully installed a custom turbo system based around a garrett gt3071r on a 2007 hyundai tiburon 2.0litre i4 (which originally did not have any turbo), tuning it myself.

I'd really like to be able to get the s-line steering wheel (three spoke), mostly to be able to get the paddle shifters, however even if that is not possible, the look and feel of the three spoke wheel is just a lot more appealing.

So my questions relate to retrofitting the s-line steeringwheel. If the wheel itself has the buttons and rollers like my b8 one does, along with the tiptronic paddle shifters, can i make it work? Are there only specific model s-line steeringwheels that will work to retrofit my b8?

    Thank you!

Check out this thread for info...at least you can ask the Europrice guy some questions about steering wheels, etc.

Ahh they do offer a package with the harness, nice! I've been looking on ebay actually, and trying to figure out with ETKA if certain parts would be able to fit, but nobody would know better than someone that's done it before.

I'll send Europrice a PM to see what i can find out, thank you!

Or you could go and get a new perf leather (8k) 3 poke wheel and a new airbag and just swap your own with it. Easy piesy. The 4 spoke & 3 spoke (sport) do not have interchangeable airbags, but do have the same harness, so you must get a new airbag - hence why these cost a cool G.

Search over to DavidB8s site for the swap info plus there's info here on both adapting and making your own harness or swapping it all together (JSmithy I belive did it).

If you want paddle shifters and want a 4 spoke wheel, nbone exist in the USA - you can only get that from the Fatherland. Search ebay.de and look for "Lenks Rad" & "DSG". You'll find them once every now and then - kinda rare find. This way you just swap your wheel and keep your existing airbag.

I myself swapped over from a standard 4 spoke to a 4 spoke with paddles. Loving the uniqueness of mine. Got a post here somewhere long back...

Cool, thanks for the info! I ended up buying a three spoke s-line wheel with paddles supposedly off a MY2010, so i'm crossing my fingers that it ought to work with my own vehicle. Hopefully it'll be one of many mods that i undertake on the audi.

You got the airbag with it also I hope? You will also need to code your Module 16 to allow for the paddles once installed, since I see you have a VAG-Comm coming thats easy.

Before you make the swap, make sure you read the write up on electrical discharge and accidental airbag deployment and you might want grab a M12 spline bit (Or maybe a T55 will work also...)
    Good luck!

I have a bit of experience removing the steeringwheel and airbag off of my Hyundai, so i should be good there. For tools, i'm not sure what i need yet. I got the Bentley manuals and bookmarked a thread on here, but will probably have to pick a few things up since it seems like Audi uses a lot more Torx, Hex, and Square type bolts than Hyundai.

And yeah, the wheel came with the airbag and connector. I learned enough to know that the four spoke airbag is not compatible with the three spoke. :)

yes it is possible to retrofit the s-line steering wheel... at the most you may need to swap/mod the airbag harness, and if you don't currently have paddle shifting, you'd need to enable that to use paddle shift if you're an auto.

Hey all, so i received the wheel from the auction yesterday and had a chance to open the box and take it apart today.

Can anyone tell me if this is actually from a B8, specifically a MY2010 like my vehicle? And if it's not, what would i do to make the wheel work on my car?

In addition, i don't like how the thumb controls are just matte black with no chrome surround. The wheel in my car now has a chrome surround, and if anyone knows if it's possible to just swap them, that would be cool. So more specifically, if someone knows if the standard chrome surround wheel button section of MY2010 wheels has the plug to insert the paddle into.

Here are the photos if someone can share some insight. Thank you!

^** yeah, i got a few other things hehe.

is there a part number inside the steering wheel?

it was my understanding all of the B8 S-line steering wheels had smooth leather up top and botton and air leather only on the sides like mine above and like this one:

I had thought so too on the air leather vs smooth leather, since the only wheels i'd seen had been ones like yours, but i don't know.. And unfortunately there is no audi part number sticker on the wheel, so i can't give you a part number off of it. The only thing that is close to resembling a part number was the embossed numbers on the top of the wheel area where the airbag sits, which i snapped in the last of my pics above. It said 4F0 124 A.

    Any clue?

It's a two row of six pin connector.

That does not include an airbag. You would need to purchase a three-spoke airbag with it (the airbag for a four-spoke wheel will not fit a three-spoke wheel) which costs a lot more than the wheel itself.

You will need to use your oem air bag cables from 4 spoke if you want everything to work properly unless you have a b8 3 spoke, I have s5 and that's what we had to do

will an airbag off of a round 3 spoke wheel fit in a flat bottom steering wheel? What i'm reading is that a 4 spoke airbag won't fit but in my case, I have an S4 with a 3 spoke but I want the flat bottom steering wheel.

This can be confusing...I'm trying to see if a 2011 A3 Sport steering wheel will work on a 2009 A4. I want to do a straight swap, airbags and all. Not sure if the harnesses will match up though, and still there's nothing here to indicate one way or the other...

Have a question about swapping wheels and didn't want to start a new thread. I have a 2010 w/sports package and the leather on the wheel (specifically on the top) is worn. I love the feel of a new steering wheel so I purchased an S4 wheel from another forum member.

The new wheel does not have paddle shifters, which I don't really care about because I never use them (and if I really want to I'll just put my old wheel back on). Will my car throw any errors installing the new wheel since I have paddle shifters enabled and am installing a wheel without them?

You need to code out the paddle shifters with VCDS in two controllers: Steering wheel and Gearbox. Takes about 10mins and it's really easy to return it to stock if you want to.

Hey there! I have a doubt regarding this thread

I just bought a 3 spoke wheel (with paddle shifters) without the airbag for my A4 (B8) thats 4 spoke

I have an old a4 (B7) steering wheel 3 spoke with airbag

What do I need to do so I can have the airbag running perfect in the car?

    Greetings

    George

Hmmm...would it be possible to obtain a 3 spoke airbag (cover only, not the actual bag) and replace the 4 spoke with it. I mean, they are the same shape, only difference is the provision for the extra spoke and their locations?

it's not even close. the mounting point is different and that is more important than the cover.

Quick noob question here, looking into doing this, if I currently do not have paddle shifters, and new steering has them, will they work with the retrofit ? Or I have to find a steering wheel without them ?

You should be able to enable the paddle shifters with VAG COM.

Just saying as it has been asked before: Paddle shifters only work with automatics.

The paddles can be activated with VCDS, and need to be coded to 2 controllers: The steering collumn control module (SCCM / Slip ring) and the gearbox. I haven't tried activating them on a multitronic, but I would assume it is possible. Tiptronics and S-Tronics work fine with retrofitted paddles.

When swapping from a wheel w/o paddles to a wheel w/ paddles, you only need to enable coding in the steering wheel module - the gearbox module does not need to be touched. Paddles work with multitronic, tiptronic, and stronic - so all auto transmissions.

It doesn't matter if you have nav or not. You can still control the radio and Bluetooth from the steering wheel. If your car didn't come with an MFSW from the factory you will need a new slip ring / SCCM.

I have an old a4 (B7) steering wheel 3 spoke with airbag

What do I need to do so I can have the airbag running perfect in the car?

The B7 airbag works fine, but you need to use the wiring loom from the B8. The large yellow connector that connects to the steering collumn is different. I had a B7 RS4 steering wheel in my old B8.
