Ok so i have rims that have some curb rash on them. I went on A4 mods and looked at the diy but none of the parts stores around me carry plasti-kote they only carry duplicolor. Does anyone know the equivalent duplicolor color to the toyota super silver 5733?

i dont know how many times i have said this in these "wheel paint help threads", do NOT ever use plasti-dip or any variation of that paint on your wheels. it will peel off and get damaged really really easily.

stick with the duplicolor, that stuff is indestructible. i have had my wheels duplicolor painted black for over a year now with zero chipping and any problems. the stuff can handle all the harsh wheel cleaners and can stand up to tons of road abuse (i drive up to the ski resorts around portland a lot during the winter and the roads get really bad + covered with gravel).

use this stuff and get a couple good coats of a flat/low gloss clear coat, im telling you guys.

Clear coat must be the key when using Duplicolor. I didn't clear mine and they have chipped like an SOB!

i use regular Rustoleum metal paint on my wheels. my summer wheels have lasted 2 summers without any chipping or imperfections. and my winter wheels have been gold for 1 winter so far with no chipping. just 2 coats of metal primer, and 7 coats of color. with not clear coat. rustoleum has worked better than any other paint i've used to paint wheels with

I think duplicolor only comes in a few colors. Black, graphite and silver. I am currently in the process of painting my wheels, starting with the spare to test. I did one wheel a while back with duplicolor silver and it ended up looking pretty matte. This time I am going to give them a nice coat of clear and hopefully they will come out nice and glossy silver looking. I had a ton of curb rash and scratches to repair to, so I used some bondo and filler primer and so far they are looking good. I can post a pic or two in a few days when I'm done if there's any interest.

    Living in Somerville now.

Finished up the spare tonight. The clear didn't take well. I think I tried to do too much in one day. I put down two coats of graphite, followed by two coats of silver and two of clear. The clear was a little runny in a couple of places and washed the silver out a bit in spots. Now I know. Good thing I tried it on the spare first. Next time I'm going to let the graphite sit overnight and do the silver and clear the next day. I like the look of the graphite behind silver though.

I had hoped it would give it a darker finish. Somewhere between silver and gunmetal. Now I'm not so sure it darkened it up at all. The wheel is just very slightly darker than OEM finish. And tiny bit more metallic. And clear makes a WORLD of difference. I would never do this again without putting a clearcoat on top.

OK here are some pics of the wheel I tried. It was cloudy so it is pretty hard to tell the true nature of the paint job. The first pic, the painted wheel is standing alone, next to a mounted OEM wheel. In the third pic, the painted wheel is lower left. The fourth pic, the painted wheel is in the lower half of the image. You can see the difference between the painted wheel and the oem wheel there. It is slightly darker and slightly more metallic.

I like it... didnt notice the slightly darker shade until the last pic, and i like it a lot. at this point anything looks better than my current wheels. i have stock usp 18s that look like a peeling sunburn. someone must have tried to paint them before and done a horrible prep job, b/c the first time i washed them they started to flake and come off in sheets. aweful!

I still have to do my second coat on mine, but the grey in the middle looks insane ! (in my opinion)
I just used red scotch-brite to rough up the finish on the stock wheels, then spray away lol

hah no even..I scotch brited to rough up the finish, then sprayed on one coat of the sort of "gun metal" grey Dupli-Color...I did the one coat a bit thick, but it was still just one coat. It seems to be holding up fine to the elements. But yeah, it came out looking great. They could use a second coat, but don't necessacarily need a second coat.

clear is obviously going to give you a shinier appearance and will definitely help the strength of the coat against rock chips and such. It isn't absolutely necessary though.

Also to speed up the drying in-between coats you can hit the wheels with a heat gun

a normal clear will make the paint look a little shinier, i went with a flat clear since i wanted a matte black look.

regular spray can clears are not very durable either. Wheels look good for a very short time. trust me, I have done this sort of thing for a living for the past 25 years. The one exception is if you go to a body shop supply house, there is a spray can clear that is a real automotive 2 stage urethane in a spray can. it has an activator in a separate compartment, and you push a button to mix the two components, and then you have about 24 hours shelf life to use it. Great for doing jams, engine compartments, wheels, etc.
