Why you SHOULD take your A4 offroad

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Here is an anti-thesis of Synthetik's thread. I went camping up in Bailey and then Breckenridge this weekend. It was a beautiful weekend to get outdoors, drink a little beer and climb around the mountain. We spent the first night near Red Cone Pass and just to access the site there was some major rough to get through. Needless to say, the Audi conquered it like a beast. I wanted to post this thread to obviously contrast Synthetik's but also to show all the haters why I'm not painting my lowers or going to coilovers any time soon!

    Here are le pics.

    Out past Alma.

The road in was pretty tame although it could have used some grading.

    The old pooch.

Trekking into the site. Before anyone says it, this is ON the trail. Will all of the 4x4 trail closures going on, I would not give the sport of offroading a bad name. I have a vested interest in the sport to say the least.

We were pretty well tucked away.

IMHO u have the wrong car for this sport, an Allroad would be better suited, but cool none-the-less.

What does the allroad have that my car doesn't? (other than a 2.7T)

FWIW, I'm in the process of building a metal skidplate to protect some of the more critical components underneath.

And for good measure, here is part of Red Cone pass.

Uh, air suspension, 3ft of ground clearance, locking diffs for offroad use and wide flares

That all sounds nice but I much prefer the A4.

(Mostly I'm just lazy and don't want to learn how to work on the 2.7T)

Looks like a blast, I would do it save for the Red Cone Pass part. I went camping in WV last year and took the car mosetly because the road leading in was awesome and super twistie. As we got in further to the state park it turned in to the same thing, gravel roads, then super rutted roads where I had to drive on the edge and the middle, a little undercarriage rubbing never hurt anything.. :)

The allroad is probably better for this but who wants the headache of maintaining that airbag suspension or replacing it when it goes bad(and it WILL go bad)

Air suspension doesn't get you 3 feet of ground clearance, more like 10". And they don't have locking diffs either, just the normal Quattro with "EDL" just like the B6. The wide flares are cool though.

This was a small section the trail up to the camp site. None of those rocks are bigger taller than 6-8". It's all about tire placement.

the stock a4 seems to be pretty useless for "off-road" adventures. the articulation is minimal, and the lack of any diff being lockable is brutal.

add in a severe lack of any low-end grunt, and trying to get up anything iffy and steep, ends up with a stalled engine or burnt clutch.

I really tried, and looked at all sorts of suspension upgrades, but without serious $$$ you're stuck with a low-slung car that only shines on not-so-steep fairly smooth gravel roads (and snowy/icy roads).

I wanted to get rid of my land rover, and only use the audi, but I've come to realize that the audi belongs on paved roads, and the rover on the off roads.

You people think my aim is to go rockcrawling and do some serious offroading. I was just posting this as a joke to Scott's thread and show that these cars can tame mild rocky terrain. Obviously, I'm not conquering obstacles like my jeep.
