Here it is as clear as I can make it:
    0. Display reads "Service!" when you first start the car.
    1. With the ignition key in the off position, push and hold the right button under the speedometer. This is the button you use to reset the trip odometer also.
    2. Turn the ignition key to the on position, but don't start the engine. Keep holding down the right button while you turn the key.
    3. Push the left button under the tachometer. Your service light should reset to say something like "Service in 8100 miles."

    OR

    Audi A4 & A6 (All years)
    • Turn off the ignition
    • Press and hold the button on the left side of the display while turning the ignition on
    • Service OIL will be displayed
    • Pull out the button on the right side of the display until the service prompt is cleared
    • The display should now read **-

If the above procedure does not work, outlined below is an alternative procedure:

    • With the ignition off, push the right button
    • Turn the ignition on and then pull the left button
    • This should clear the warning message

The alternate procedure which works for the C5 A6 4.2L is:

    1. Turn off the ignition
    2. Press and hold the trip odometer reset button on the right side of the display while starting the vehicle, continue to hold in the reset button.
    3. The central display will now read "Service in X,XXX units", units will of course be in either kilometers or miles depending on whether you car is set for metric or standard.
    4. Press the press control button underneath the tachometer to reset indicator.
    5. The central display will now read "Service in 12,000km/8,000miles".

The 4.2L engine has a sensor in the oil pan which automatically monitors the oil quality and is used to calculate the actual time needed to service so if you reset the service indicator in between oil changes, the oil service indicator will adjust the kms/miles to service accordingly once you've driven the car long enough for the sensor to get a reading.

just rest mine last week. Turn key on, do not crank over engine. when service is displayed hold BOTH dash "pins" the odometer and the clock...

    BOOM reset occurs.

Good to know. Now I do not have to just ignore the light up there when I turn the car on.

i have a 1999 a6 2.8 and mine says service OIL and none of the methods above are working for me, unless i am doing something wrong... BTW one of the methods says to pull on the knob on the right side but it is impossible to pull on that one, because you can only press it in. any ideas? :D
