    Viper Smart Start

Anyone have the Viper Smart Start in their B7? I have a manual so I would not be using the auto-start feature, but would like it for the rest.

Remote start is not a good idea for manuals though. Most install places will not install a remote start on a manual because the clutch-depression-safety would have to be over ridden.

Not only that, I mean I naturally leave the car in gear after shutting off the car. So auto start can be a problem for most manual drivers.

I agree that manual remote start is not a great idea, but it is doable and you will get used to not leaving your cR in gear if you install it. I installed before on my b5 and just left the hand brake on.

whatever you do, don't get the remote start system that you can run on iphones. not worth the money one bit.

The only thing I forgot to add, even though it wouldn't be as practical with this car, I loved the remote start when I had it on my old Tundra.

It also allowed me to adjust the air temp. Perfect for defrosting your windows on a cold morning.

i went to a authorized viper security dealer/installer, guy told me they installed on a b7 before, cost the owner over 1k$ including all hardware, they have to recode your ecu to allow for the new key, remote start, you need a completely new key and unlock system, and they had to contact audi to authorize it or some bullshit. pretty much its not worth it.

    Alarm and remote start

    Guys,

The new Viper systems 5901/5902 can do remote start with manual transmission. Has neutral safety built in. You have to lose a key for these cars and most European cars. You only need to take to the dealership if you want an extra key (just give up your valet). This is not a DIY poject so I would suggest taking to someone authorized to do these systems that is familiar with these types of cars. I work for the company and would be happy to point you in the right direction.

Will be installing the 5902v with Smartstart in my B7 S4 very soon.

I have a Viper 5301LE with SmartStart installed in my B7. I did it myself, then again I also do it for a living. It's actually not that bad. I bought my B7 as a CPO so it came with 4 or 5 keys. I used the plastic valet key, the one that fits in your wallet. You need two interfaces to do it, one for the key and a canbus one for the locks. Unfortunately, DEI quit making the CANMAX400 which is the one I used on mine. With the CANMAX400 the install was pretty easy, the new Nissan's with the smart keys are a lot worse.

Anyways, from my remote, I can roll the windows up and down, comfort open them which open the windows just an inch or so, and trunk release. The SmartStart works great, though there is a 10s delay or so (same as sending a text message), but I can lock/unlock, open the trunk and start my car from my phone.

Originally I was just carrying around my switchblade key and using my phone to start it when needed. Only thing that sucks is you cannot unlock the doors with the switchblade when the car is running. So you gotta use the phone, wait 10 seconds and then get in. Lately, I have started carrying around my other valet key and the Viper remote, which works good, but is more of a hassle, I'm a minimalist when it comes to my keys.

Forgot to mention that mine is an auto. Billy is correct that any of the new Viper (DEI) products 5101 and up have a built in manual mode. Essentially, you have to do a sequence each time you get out of the car in order for it to be able to remote start before you get back into it.

You have to put it in neutral, put your foot on the brake, put the parking brake on, release the brake pedal, and then hit the remote start button on the remote. The lights will flash 5 times indicating you have done the sequence. You then take the key out, car will still be running, and get out of the car. When you lock it from the Viper remote, the car will shut off, you can then remote start it. If a door is opened before before you try to remote start it, it will not do so unless you do the sequence all over again. Bypassing the clutch is easy, just takes a relay.

I have the VIPER 5902 with SmartStart installed on my 6MT B7 and love it! It's one of the best upgrades I've ever made.

Hammer97e is correct with the whole "remote start sequence" but I opted to bypass the clutch since I've had many manual cars with remote start in the past.

For those B7 owners who live in the tristate NY/NJ/CT area, I can refer you to the shop I got my remote start installed and it will cost you less than 1k installed.

I don't know how a remote start would effect the handbrake though? It seems like the weather was at fault, lol But I've never experienced anything like that.

I got my Viper 5902 installed at Wired Electronics in Linden, NJ. And if you didn't already know, I drive a 2007 Audi A4 2.0T 6 Speed Manual Transmission

    http://www.viper.com/ShopViperProduc...ItemCode=5902V

Wired Electronic is well-known among the JDM crowd since they mostly specialize in JDM. But I've dealt with them in the past with my previous cars and know they do quality work so I've had them work on my Audi.

I've contacted the owner, Nino, regarding prices and it's safe to say that it will cost you less than $1000 for a Viper 5902 Alarm/Remote start with SmartStart installed on an Audi B7 platform. The Viper 5902 is currently "the top of the line" alarm/remote start that DEI (Directed Electronics, Inc) has available so if you're on a budget, there are cheaper alternatives to consider. Price range anywhere from $200-1000 installed, depending on the alarm/remote start you choose. Give them a call for an exact price!

Let them know, kristokes sent you lol

Btw the Viper 5902 has a neutral safety switch for manual transmission applications. You will require to perform a sequence in order to remote start your car. I personally opted to bypass all the safety features since I'm familiar with having a remote start on a manual transmission. So you have that option to think of. Please check DEI's website for full detail on the neutral switch for manual transmissions.

Pm me. Install completed and flawless with 5902v and Smartstart. I do work for DEI and would be happy to point u in the direction of a really good installer/dealer since these are not the easiest cars to integrate with.

    install help?

First post. I just got a 2005 a4 2.0t (im pretty sure this is a B7 model, i think it switched over mid production with the 2.0t only out in 2005.5) and Im thinking of getting the viper 5902. Ive done stereos before, but I dont think I have the savvy to install this myself. How much should I expect to pay for an just the install? I can get a good deal on the unit alone.

I always leave my stick in neutral when parking, so i dont see the remote starter as a problem. (ive been told not to do this before, leave it in neutral, but never why)

How is the battery life on the remote with the screen? and where do you charge it, its mini USB right?

Can this entirely replace my audi key/remote and just a regular key so i have less in my pocket?

    thanks

I am an installer at Best Buy, and I would not recommend the Smart start to anyone.

Reason #1 The new units do not come with a remote, so you have to use your phone to control it
Reason #2 The app has issues and doesn't always work.. When it does work it works great!!
Reason #3 You have to pay for the service.. basiclly paying for a text plan for the smart start module itself... the app generates a txt message thats sent to the module

    Now for the good part...
If you can get the older version (vss4000) it comes with an antenna and remote, so you can use either the app or remote.
Also with the newer system (vss3000) you can add the antenna and remote for $100

SN: All of Viper's high end systems with LCD/2-way remotes, the remotes almost always stop working and they are only covered for a limited time or not at all, unlike the system which have lifetime warranty.

Not entirely true, but be careful. And the 5902 is a great system.

The smartstart can be added to most DEI systems for 199.. Best buy packages one without a remote for cost reasons. I would suggest buying a package that has a remote.

All Remotes from Directed are covered under lifetime warranty as long as no physical damage and purchased legitimately.

This works over cellular data so it will work based on coverage in your area. Live in Philly area and have had very little issues in the two years I had this installed.

You can also have notifications sent via email if you don't have text plan on your phone.

I have the 5902 and love it. I WOULD recommend it to anyone, just don't get it installed at Best Buy. They hire anyone to do installs there and most of the time are young kids.

Wow just surprised on how many people have problems with the remote starter but I to have a Viper Remote starter and yes its a older model its the 7701V and I have had it for 3 years now and its a combo with a alarm and (knock on wood) no problem and it only cost $250 to install and a very well recognized shop! I have a 2006 B7 auto though! Awesome investment :) thought i'd share my story also

If you're willing to take a trip to North Jersey, there's a shop that I personally take my cars to called Prime Motoring. Mention you're an Audiziner for exclusive discount pricing...
