    Exclamation egt sensor install problem

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
ive spent all day trying to get the passenger side egt sensor put in, the threads on the sensor are fine, the threads in the mainfold look good, when i go to screw it in i can get 5 0r 6 turns by hand and only 2 with my wrench then it pops out. is there a chance the threads are not maching up? im not sure whats going on here. can i run the car with the sensor only a little bit in ? and is there another way or somthing i can use to get the sensor to stay in ? please help as i need the car for monday, thank you

ps the sensor im installing is a used one i got from the classifields here. on my old sensor the nut got mangled and there were no threads on it.

Since you're having issues with a "new" sensor as well, you may want to look at the manifold bung as the source of the problem. Either that or you're not coming in head on. I'd bet something is stripped down there though.

yes, get a tap set and reset the inner threads. if the old one's threads were mangled, i'd say the inner threads on the mani are fucked. just tap it to recut the threads in it.

Sears, Harbor Freight. You need the size that goes in there! Take the sensor up to home depot and thread it into one of their bolt size measuring boards and see what size it is. You can buy individual taps or a set that has the size you need in it.

The sensor side of the bung is made of brass so if you stripped it that would make sense, but very unlikely as it is still hard to do as it is a pretty large roll on the thread. The egt bung on the manifold side is possible to strip from rust and that sounds like what it is. I would just retap it and you should be fine. If you dont mind sort of permanently installing it in you could put jbweld on the sensor fitting and then plop it in and let it dry over night. That will more than likely hold it. Or you can braze it on since its brass to steel and that will also keep it on. The sensor should be able to take the heat as it was designed for more then what brazing produces heat wise. Those three options are the only ones I see.

the shop that did my 3- might have used jb weld on it, i never cosidered that, i think i will re tap and see what happens then if i have to i will go jb weld. thank for the advise, thanks for putting up with the pay-pal hassle.

with jb weld, ther is no getting it off when it on? just down the road if the sensor shits the bed?

No problem about the paypal issue, I understand, just seemed fishy at first. glad it worked out for both of us. The sensor looks good thread wise, your manifold is probably the culprit. You may want to fill it with jb weld, drill, and tap but that is kind of a ghetto solution. I would just try and retap it by iteself first. If not luck with that just jb weld on the sensor threads ( a bunch) and thread/push it into the manfiold and let cure. That will work and when you have to remove it you will have to really torque on it get it out of break the sensor and use a shisel and punch to pount out the jb weld. None of this is ideal of course.

i went the route of JB weld on the sensor and pushed it in place, i had a hard time with the sensor you (lotusgardener) sent me so i used my old sensor and covered it in jb weld and shoved it in the hole. im going to bolt the y pipe back on tonight and fire her up in the morning and see how she runs. i will save the money and get my tunner to write the egts out so i dont have to worrie about them again.

That should do it. As long as you plug the EGT hole in the manifold and code out the sensor, it'll work just fine.
