like do you mean if you were to floor it on ice and it wont engage or you push the esp button and the light won't go on? possibly check an esp fuse cause if it doesnt work the light won't turn on from what i have found out.

Ya no matter what I do I can't get the light on the dash to flash or anything. Should I try replacing the actuall button itself. I have a donor car at the junk yard that has a complete interior.

Hey guys, sorry to bring this old thread from the dead... But this exact same thing is happening to me. It won't light upon ignition, if I'm sliding, or anything... I can't figure it out. Help me out?

IF you don't have any codes and can talk the modules on VCDS then it's a bad bulb or someone put tape behind the light to help sell the car.

Sorry, I'm new... Forgot to mention. But what is VCDS? And is there a DIY on replacing the bulb on the back of the cluster?

ESP doesn't have a "module" itself, it's a function of the ABS system. Can't say for sure what would cause this, but when did this behavior first start? Has it ever worked? The button is just a momentary that tells the ABS to engage or disengage the ESP function. Scan your ABS module and post the results here, maybe it's coded wrong? In VW's with the same gen ABS system there is in fact a "hack" (via coding or putting a resistor at the back of the switch) that allows you to disable the ESP which a whole bunch of people prefer for sporty/ track driving.
There's no bulb for the indicator, it's an LED. And either way it wouldn't affect the function of the ESP- it would still work.

VCDS: Vag Com Diagnostic Software : http://www.ross-tech.com
It's the best tool of any kind that you can possess for an Audi. I'd trade my spare tire for VCDS if I didnit have it- I use it 1000X more.

I don't have vag com, but I've done a scan with the obdII scanner and there has never been any codes for the ESP or the ABS. This has been like this since I've bought the car, almost a year and a half. But the car doesn't act weird or anything. When I have gone into a slide I have felt a braking feeling before, so I guess ESP has engaged (not really sure what else it could have been), but still have not gotten a light for it. Even if I press the button the light won't turn on.
