    Torx bolt holding on rotor?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am in the process of changing my front brakes. In the bentley manual, it says the rotor is supposed to be held on with a torx bolt. Whoever worked on my brakes last did not put that torx bolt back in. I can't imagine the little bolt holds any load compared to the wheel studs, but I was just wondering how many of you are running around without this bolt in? It has made getting the caliper back on quite annoying, so I am definitely going to replace it, but it is going back the way it was now that I finally have the assembly back together.

Anyone know offhand the thread/pitch of the bolt I need? Can't seem to find it in the manual. Or should I just suck up and go to the dealer?

    Thanks.

They torx bolt just holds the rotor in place. From what I have heard, these often seize up after time and sometimes have to be drilled out. At this point, most don't bother putting it back in. If its simply missing and all the threads are good, I am sure someone on here can chime in with a part number for you.

just as above, holds the rotors on. shouldn't be very important, however if you are anal go for it; go to dealer.

Those stupid mother f-ing bolts. Keep them out. They rusted up on me and I had to go buy titanium drill bits to get them out. The only reason they're there are to keep the rotors on as the car moves down the assembly line. You won't need them for anything, but as someone said you'll probably have to get from the dealer or retap the hole with a tap and die set so you can get your own custom screws from Lowe's or somewhere.

hahaha, sounds like you had some fun with them. I think this is pretty much the general consensus on these bolts.

I've actually got essentially a full mechanic's toolset, so none of what you spoke about presents a huge problem for me. However, the prospect of doing it, and maybe more than once (or every time on a continuing basis) is more than I sort of want to bear. I just needed a third hand to help me place the rotor instead of usingthe bolt. That will have to do.

Yeah, what should have been a few hours project ended up taking a few days because I kept trying to salvage the bolts but I eventually got sick of it. I can't remember if I had to drill out the rear ones too but I believe I had to drill them all out. I actually bought Cobalt bits instead of Titanium and they worked out great. I bought easy outs to try and back the things out and ended up breaking one of them. Luckily I was able to confuse Sears enough into trading the easy out tool because they wanted to classify it as a drill bit.

matthewb2795 - how did you pop off the side markers to smoke them out? I found the tutorial on how to remove the bumper reflectors which I'm going to do today but couldn't find the other one. I know its out there because this mod started a few years ago I just can't find it. Thanks.

OP - sorry for the thread jack.

If you get a credit card and slide it underneath either the left or right side of the sidemarker, the sidemarker will slide over and you can pull it out. You might not even need a card, just push it to the left or the right, I forget, but it is really easy.

The set screw? It just holds the rotor in place when reinstalling it...its not really needed.

yea but they will rape you in shipping charges... so you are better off going to the dealer or not putting it on at all.

We started carrying a stainless steel screw which replaces the OEM screw - essentially preventing seizing into the rotor. For .99 I feel it is absolutely worth it as neither my housemate or girlfriend are terribly mechanically helpful - any help holding my rotor on is welcome while finagling the caliper over it. I've dealt with the OEM seized screws and these stainless screws are a very easy solution.

As for shipping charges, we don't have anything other than boxes to ship things with. So yes, you would do well to "fill up your box" when ordering these screws. We've maximized small and medium package shipping rates recently with UPS, I think you'll find shipping on a full box very desirable.

I use the ECS bolts after having to drill one out. Real pain in the ass, but the ECS ones have been great and very convenient to just take a phillips head to.

    I3oricua, I sent you a PM.

I might purchase those bolts so I don't have any troubles down the road. Seems like safe insurance for $4. Damn and I just bought something from ECS which arrived today!

Thanks for the reviews and the feedback/orders. Yeah, I have to admit - one screw ended up being very handy.
