    A5 2.0T versus a GTI

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know they're completely different cars, but did anyone else consider getting a GTI instead of an A5? I'm a young college grad (no wife, kids, etc.) and I want to get a two door while I still can. Is the price difference between the A5 2.0T and the GTI (powered by roughly the same engine) worth it?

defiantly worth the price difference. Pull up somewhere in an a5, respect. Pull up in a GTI, lost in the crowd

the a5 is a better looking car
its classier, its a car that gets alot of attention, its better equipped aka has gps nicer seats nice leather nice rims, quattro.
while the gti doesnt come with all that much. Ive had 2 gtis and honestly if you put a gti or a a5 infront of me an a5 is clearly the winner but thats personal opinion
while the engines might be the same everything else changes, the weight, quattro to fwd, interior luxuries, equipment, exterior features
so aka these two cars arent even comparable if you want to compare a gti to something then compare it to a a3
a a3 and a gti are practically the same car, same engine, chassis, gearbox etc.
but if your thinking about a gti or a5 go with the a5 honestly better car!

Very true, but I really want a 2-door. I'd certainly be between an A3 and GTI if they sold a 2-door A3 stateside!

yep i know what you mean, in mexico they sell both 2 and 4 door plus they sell the s3 which is great.
honestly if you have the money they a5 hands down, the new gti(mk6) is pretty nice but the a5 is simply a better car all around

I'd agree in general, you can't beat an Audi interior. The plaid cloth seats are sorta growing on me though cause they're just so raw and unique. However, the gf says if I'm going to get "the golf cart car" instead of the Audi, I have to opt for the Autobahn package for the leather.

this is a very tough call. i have an S5, but two of my best friends recently bought GTI's. honestly, there are some things i like better about the GTI. the interior is fantastic (no qualification of "for it's price" needed). the car is quick and fun to drive. the steering wheel feels a little better to me too. it's a great car.

all that said, it's no S5... and probably not an A5 either (i have not driven the 2.0T, but love the 3.2). they are very different cars. if you want to have a fun to drive car to toss around corners and race from light to light, i'd take the GTI. if you are considering an automatic, the GTI dual clutch box is light years better than the tiptronic in the A5. if you want a stunningly beautiful coupe, high on sex appeal, great for cruising on a road trip then the A5 is your car. it will definitely stand out in a crowd, but will lighten your wallet by a bit more...

I have to go against the grain here and say it really depends on what you're looking for. My wife just bought a Mini Copper S and we fight over who gets to drive it. Yes, my A5 gets more attention but that's never been a reason for me to drive anything. And yes, the A5 is smoother and a higher end car but it downright boring to drive compared to the Mini. A GTI would be much more fun to drive than the A5...but that's me.

I don't have an A5, but I have a Stg 2+ S4. My wife's automatic Mazda3 is just as fun to drive around as the S4. Sure the S4 is faster and comfortable, but I get so much more utility from the Mazda3 and it's easier to toss into corners. That plus it's cheaper on the gas :)

In the end is just a different kind of "fun". Depends on what you are going to do most of the time with the car (are you going to sit in traffic all day?)

Thanks for all of the input guys. Well I've decided I am going to go with the GTI. At 22, I figure there's plenty of time for me to get into an Audi later. In fact, I just got a job with Volkswagen so I can take advantage of the short term corporate lease. (6 month minimum, 12 month max)

Perhaps I'll shoot for an Audi in a year? Just thrilled because with any other job I probably wouldn't be able to get into an Audi before the age of 30!

I'm 99% sure the A5 2.0T and GTI 2.0T are completely different, just like the B8 A4 2.0T is completely different from the B7 A4 2.0T. Regardless, both cars are great in their own way. Enjoy!

Thanks! I do know that the A5 2.0T is 211 hp versus 200 in the GTI. That's all I'm sure of though.

A5 2.0T has valvelift so it makes more hp and more torque, uses a timing chain vs timing belt, has a top-mounted oil filter, etc.

Every review mentions the fact that when you see the A5 you just want ot have sex with it. They have a very unique look and leave anyone who doesn't know much about cars very interested in finding out what just drove past them. Drive the classy 2-door for many years since the A5 has more style

    Have fun with the GTI!
My buddy in NC traded in his EVO IX MR for a GTI and doesn't regret it one bit. I would not have a problem trading the S4 for a GTI if someone gave me good money for the S4.

That's bcause the b7 had the 2.ot fsi while the b8 has the newer 2.0t tfsi which is what the mk6 gti has as well which both are chain driven cams not belt. The mk5 had the belt fsi as well like the b7 except for the last year of the mk5 which had the tfsi. The extra horsepower comes from ecu programming which vw has almost always given audi a few more horsepower over their vw's to give you a better sense of value especially with bigger body cars using the same engine as the smaller vw's.

^Interesting, I wasn't aware that the mk6s now have the TFSIs. I am still under the impression that VW engines do not have valvelift like Audi engines do. Is this not the case?

The GTI engine doesn't have the valve lift but it does have the chain which is nice beacuse it gets rid of the cam/fuel pump issues of the fsi engines. Audi uses the valve lift mainly for more torque to get it's heavier cars moving off the line like a v-6, which is why the A3 does not have it.
