    what are some of the basic things that need to be looked at when inspecting a car you might buy with 90-100K+ miles on it?i figure i place the turbo(s) anyway shorty.

    or say im looking at a b6 s4 4.2 v8.. what do i need to look for in a car that has roughly 100k miles so i dont get ripped off

    Yeah... any doubt on a timing belt (et al) servicing then it really needs to be done on as a precaution. It's one of the main "instant engine killers". However, if the timing belt is due then it gives you some bargaining power on the price in lieu of getting the work done. Evidence of regular oil changes is important too.

    You really need to do an extended test drive allowing the car to warm up properly and include highway driving if possible. Some cars show few problems at 100k so it's hard to mention specifics. I'm sure someone will give a life expectancy of various components but the are only guidelines. You really have to just look out for anything that doesn't sound, feel or look right.

    if you are looking at a S4 then the S4 forum will give you much better info since we don't have the same engine.
    if it's a A4 then come back and we'll be able to give you more specifics.
    but as others have already mentioned, timing belt is a big thing to make sure it's not gonna fail.

    There is no timing belt with the B6 S4 4.2 V8. It is a timing chain.
