first off, my turbo is gone, everytime i reach boost i hear a dentist drill noise so i want to throw a new snail in there and i've been researching and i came across the k03s and the k03..from my understanding the 01 a4 1.8tq comes stock with a k03s? or just a k03? and which would be a better choice?

If you have an AWM, then get the k03s replacement (easiest to find it from a B6 A4 guy parting with his). If you have any other B5 A4, does not really matter.

x2. If you've got AWM get a K03s. Otherwise, get the cheapest one.

Yes, AWM is the engine code for the 2001 A4 1.8.

Yup, which means your car has a k03s. So try and source out a k03s for cheap somewhere.

If you guys are using the jargon "K03s" as in "comparable to a transversal K03s" then that means you're discussing the K03-073 which was used only on European trim cars. Here in the US, we got stuck with the lame K03-029, which is directly comparable to the plain ole K03 used on transversal. Making matters worse, a lot of longitudinal engines got the K03-005. That one is really lame. Puny. So the K04 is like three levels up from that base one.

The stock turbo sucks major ***. I wish the car came stock with a k04-15. If the B5 A4 wasn't such an enjoyable car to drive, I would say the car sucks on a whole.

I want to place an eliminator on my vehicle, but am always forwarned (sp??) that I would regret that I did not go bigger. I am thinking of piecing together a GT3071R kit over the next few months. First, have to complete my car where the only thing left is a BT and BBK (clutch is part of BT).

of course you want something bigger and better, that is human nature. I'm sure the elim will last you a year or two until you want something that pulls harder.

i read somewhere on here that the ko3s is not much smaller than a ko4 and upgrading to a ko4 from a ko3s wont do much for you without a ko4 specific tune... also i know that on the trunk badge the "T" next to 1.8 is either plain or has a red flag meaning it has the sport package but does that also mean it has the ko3S? slappy_dunbar thru me a curveball with the "euro-trim" vehicles got the good turbos.. whats the deal?!!!

The k04 uses the same exhaust housing and compressor as the k03(s). The internals (compressor fan blade) is the only difference as far as I know. And I can't recall what the red flag thing is. I used to think it was referring to the sports package, but it doesn't. I am too lazy to search, but it is in the archives somewhere.

The deal is we in the US got stuck with 1980's technology K03-029 until the B7 series came out. The higher-output K03-073 was used only on the 190hp cars sold outside of North America. Sharing a compressor wheel with the K04, the -073 has essentially the same (conservative) output rating from 3K Warner: 210 maximum.

The red "T" doesn't mean anything. It was put on the late 2001 B5 1.8T's. 2001.5 only, afaik. Mine is an '01 with the so-called ko3s (k03-029) and it does not have the red flag on the T. Doesn't really bother me, cause my entire car is red anyhow, lol.

So did you go with the ATP 2871? And where did you source your tuning?

I have a K03 on it's way out, and I've decided it's either a K04-015 or a GT28xx... I just don't want to regret not going with the big turbo conversion...
