Anyone with 3G and AMI and Aux input? Or just Aux..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm trying to figure out if and how to add the Aux input to the MMI 3G. I was able to enable it on the radio but figuring out the wiring is proving to be extremely convoluted. Non of the schematics I have match my car which makes it impossible to match up what may be the Aux input wiring.

Hoping it may have been an option somewhere. I have the AMI in my car right now and I know I don't really need the Aux input but when has that stopped me :)

If the unit is capable of it which it may be since it can be enabled and shows no connection even with my ipod plugged in to the AMI I have to think there may be a way to wire the aux plug up.

So anyone out there with 3G and Aux plug?

ok, I may completely wrong about this but...

I do not think it is possible to have both AMI and an Aux input - I read that they both share a single input to the radio unit, therefore it is one or the other. I guess this is why they take out the aux in jack when you have AMI and then force you to buy the AMI to headphone jack cable...

I do not believe anyone who has NAV does not have AMI... I have only seen Aux in on non nav cars (and even then very rarely)

I thought that would be the case, but if it was why my Ipod is plugged in isn't the Aux input option on the MMI show that it's in use? That and why would they build the option of choosing Aux in the MMI.

I agree with what your saying and I thought that was the case as well but just a few items that are there make me wonder. I did find schematics for all previous versions showing AUX input wiring. However they don't seem to match up with mine even in ELSA where it claims its for generation 3, of course the Bentley is a joke for anything in the MY2010 models for infotainment wiring.

Are you aware that there are alternatives to the iPod cable that comes with the car? IIRC, there's a USB cable and an aux-in cable, available as accessories. They plug in inside the glove compartment, in place of the iPod cable.

If you already knew this, never mind (and in that case, I'm not sure what you're asking).

no - he knows about those...

On cars without AMI, there is an aux-in jack inside the center console compartment, DavidB8 is trying to retrofit that...

I just bought this AUX-IN connector to replace my iPod integration and it won't work. The system doesn't recognize anything. Does the AMI need to be upgraded (downgraded)?

I would assume for AUX-IN cable you wouldn't need an upgrad
    do you have MMI 3G?

not without modifying the wiring - there is no OEM way to do it. You have to splice the Aux-In wiring with the AMI wiring because there is only one input on the back of the headunit.

You can have both. I could probably pursue a plug and play solution for people if there was enough interest.

Still working on this, my initial resource is being a bit reluctant to help out on this because it's not 100% standalone. Since the Aux is shared with the MMI the response has been to buy the AMI cable. There is only one issue with doing this and it's you can play the Aux and iPod at the same time when you have iPod selected. The same doesn't stand true when you have Aux selected, the iPod will not play. So the solution is not 100% but I think it's close enough if you ask me.

I reached out to see if i could get this done because I can not for the life of me find a male quadlock connector to make a harness. Lots of places sell kits that would jumper the Entire radio plug assembly but that is a big connector and way over kill. They aren't expensive but I just don't think it's the elegant solution although it would still make it plug and play. Certainly would be a lot less pain to just splice the 3 wires needed but where is the fun in that. The project goes on..

David, I am interested in this, but would the process be different on my car?

I don't think so. Would have to check but all it would mean would be switching 3 wires in the plug if they aren't in the same location. I haven't compared all the non/mmi equiped cars.

Yeah they are huge though, such a waste since it's only one of the 12 pin (green) connectors that has to be split off. Those quad locks are big :)

On another note I found out that some VW's have a USB plug similar to the Aux plug we have. So you could technically split that one off and put it in the centre console.

I like these smaller projects, not as expensive..

Smaller, cheaper, just the aux part: http://cgi.ebay.de/MOST-ADAPTER-VERL...item3cb8f2c023 ;-)

Much closer. I guess you could cut the header apart. Since there isn't a real connector housing on the header pins you'd have to tape them together or something to prevent them from coming apart. Tyco makes a male connector but it's made for a circuit board. That was the closest thing to a housing I have seen so far. You'd think with all those stereo kits out there someone would have made a connector. The other option I thought of was getting an AMI extension cable and cutting it open and tapping the wires that way...
