245-40/18 Silly Tire Size for 18x8

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It seems like the standard tire size to be bought for most 18 inch rims is 235-40/18, but would 245-40/18 work fine too?

I was thinking I'd go slightly wider to provide a little more leeway with curb rash (parents are not the greatest at parallel parking).
But will the 245 actually make curb rash any less likely?
Also are those tires going to look super big? Will I be like monster truck status?

Thanks for all opinions. If anybody has pictures of their car on 245-40/18s that'd be MUCH appreciated.

The 245s won't help with curb rash really, and the 40 aspect ratio is going to look beefy (in a bad way) and if you are lowered it will rub. Go with 245/35/18 if you want to be different

mmm right, yea that beefy look is kinda what i'm worried about
BUT, i'm also not lowered... like at all. haha i have the non-sport suspension, so i figured maybe the 245-40 would eliminate some of that wheel gap
but so you think it'll still look dumb?

It will fit but it won't eliminate wheel gap, it will look more monster truckish

245/40/18 will def fit, and def help against curb rash since its a wider tire, specially on a 18x8. I would run a 35 series tire unless they were 19s. A 45 series tire will give it that beefy look. I run a 235/40/18 on 18x8.5 and it looks nice, fit is almost perfect IMO. Audi also uses a 235/40 tire on they 18s for the B6 A4 USP, S4 and B7 S4

hmm yeah. i gotchya. this is tough
what do you think about the 245/35/18 idea then?
we think that wouldn't look as beefy?

I run 245/40R18 on my S-Line 8" rims for my winters. Yeah, looks a little chunkier, but I kinda like the additional 0.15" (3.81 mm) in sidewall thickness to soak up ruts/potholes/frost heaves and such. I'll run the same size for my summers, as 235s look a little too stretched on my 18x8.5" CHs & don't offer enough rim protection. I don't mind a little more meat on my sidewalls: rubber band tires aren't too helpful on the track.

But I wouldn't go with that size on an 8" rim for summer.

I have both installed on my car right now, due to finding a bubble on one of my tires (riding on a spare until tomorrow) so I can give you a nice comparison shot. Same size wheel with 235 and 245 tires. Give me a minute. Certainly does not make that much of an aesthetic difference or make it suddenly look like a monster truck, lol.

I have 245/40-18, no rubbing at all but yes, it looks kind of fatty. I am planning also to change for 245/35 or 235/40...

^ lol. you know a tire is gonna look the same from a from a side view no matter the width... side views are to see the difference in the sidewall sizes

Well you are right, the thing here is to see how the same sidewall size changes depending on the tire width.

lol to you. So you're saying that there is no difference in sidewall between a 235 and a 245 tire on the same wheel? That would be incorrect. It's almost 1/4 inch thicker.

what about track use? Would you getter performance out of the 245? Wider contact patch?
Would there be any issue with a 245/40R18 on a 18x8 RS4 Rep with a 35 offset? I don't want to rub during hard cornering. Looking to drop only about 1.2 F/R with PSS9s. I am specifically looking at the RE-11s.

Anyone wanna add on putting 235/45R18 on our car? I ask becuase, for 4 winters now i have run Dunlops Winter sport M3's and LOVE them!! My last A4 came w/ the stocker 5 spokes 17" which was my winter set up, w/ my current slilne ti, i plan to use the stock 15 spoke as winters but I can only find the M3's in that 235/45R18 size. I am only running the sport suspension, but 50/50 chances i'm dropped on stasis end of the summer. thanks in advance

Same dilema for me, 235/40/18's sold out! 245/40/18's are the next option. Anyone with experience with Bridgestone Potenza RE 760's? Summer tires and I'm in Hawaii, I guess I don't really need A/S tires...
