Belt Squealing when engine is cold

This winter I did the timing belt/water pump change. it came with a new belt.

It's been about 5,000 since, and each startup, sometimes instantly and sometimes after a few minutes of driving, the belt will squeal like all hell. I have to revv it up to 5 - 6k to make it stop. Once it stops, it doesn't start again no matter how long i drive. If the engine is warm, it doesn't squeal.

Any ideas!? i've used a can of belt dressing on it, it worked for 2 or 3 days and is now back... i'm tempted to throw the old belt back on it.

dont throw the old belt back on, just redo the timing belt tension. To do it just get C clamps and clamp down the gas tensioner and put the pin back in until you reset everything.

1.) DO NOT use belt dressing! I will not remove the actual problem and can only make it worse.

Check your AC compressor belt's tightness. If it's too loose (you can push it down on the long span easily with one finger 0.5-1 inch) loosen the set screw on the tensioner pulley, tighten and secure the pulley.

If it's the accessory belt, check your generator clutch and the belt tensioner.

I am referring to the serpentine belt from the DIY article: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=189107

i didn't notice a way to adjust that tensioner that he has his yellow cresent wrench on ;)

** is it possible to adjust this thing w/out removing the entire front bumber again?

serp belt you can take on and off without taking the front end off... but there is no way to adjust tension on it. If I am not mistaking, there could be a possibility that you got the wrong belt kit. There was a break where they made it a longer belt and you might have the smaller one.

Thanks! I noticed the new belt was a bit smaller, but not a lot and I assumed that the old one must have stretched that much. Looks like i'm putting the old one back on... I can't stand it - it's soo annoying and embarrassing!

Make sure that the tension pulley itself is not the culprit.

yea, at first i thought you meant the timing belt... go ahead and throw on the old serp belt... can do that easy with out even removing anything.
