Thinking about purchasing a 89 audi 80 quatro as a project car. I curently own a 2002 audi a4. The car only needs a new computer and two tires, also 3rd gear grinds because of bad sycros. the car comes with an extra transmission. the owner only wants 800 dollars for this car. What do you all think? is the 80 hard or easy to work on? would i have fun with it?

That might be too much for that car depending on the condition of everything else. Its probably going to be boring unless you swap a different motor into it. Then it would be endless fun.

swap an aan or a turbo'd 7aa in that thing. or if your budget allows, i would drop a 2.7t from an a6 or an s4. either way it will be really cool.

The guy selling it lowered the price, since i have a b6 a4 at the moment, i am going to wait it out and see if he lowers the price again. To answer an earlier question it has a 2.3 liter 5 cyl engine. If i do jump on this, and i dropped a 2.7 Twin in there, what else would have to be done, besides new computer which it already needs, and a new transmission (unless the current transmission would work). How much of a beast could i make this on a low budget considering i am a father of a 1 year old child, and i go to college.

well if you wanted to make it a beast for relatively cheap i would leave the 7aa block in the car.
i would replace the ecu with an 034 standalone or vems standalone , buy a gt3071r or a gt30r turbo., integrated (or some other h-beam rods) rods, rings, bearings, and new head and main studs.
depending on wich turo you go with you could theoretically see about 400 awhp. if you wanted to go really big you could do pistons as well and then just drop whatever turbo you wanted to on that beast.

thats like 5 grand right there though at least. If you dont know what you are doing you shouldn't do it. Its not easy and not cheap.

oh, I know. It just doesn't sound like the OP has the skills and budget to get it done. I'm just trying to be realistic.

I love 80/90s! they are a lot of fun, if you were looking to make it a budget fun car, your best bet would be a 10vt. complete engines with wiring can be found for 300 bucks and it is a pretty straight forward swap and you'll be able to get around 300 hp out of it. Now if you have a 2.7tt lying around it might be fun to put in there but you'll spend more in engine management then you did for everything else together.

and yes the stock transmission would bolt right up to the 2.7tt engine.

All of this also depends on your ability to work on cars and ability to solve problems. I wouldn't recommend swapping engines to most of my friends because I know how they wrench.

Another exciting swap that people are starting to do is the vr6t swap into this chassis. head over to Motorgeek.com and start searching the forums, you'll find a lot of good information on classic audi engine swaps.

not trying to bash you or anything. but all 80's came with NG 10v 5 cylinders. the 7a is the N/A 20v and only came in 90's and Coupe Quattro's.
And to op. the only easy cost effective swap is a 10vt MC1 or MC2. anything else is going to get expensive. fast. even a 10vt swap can get expensive depending on what you do.

there was a Audi 80 quattro around my area for only $700. With some minor problems but drivible, had a nice paint too. I would of so bought it but when I told my parents they said they would kick me out if I bought another Audi...lmao. I'm sure you all get it why they said that..haha. Great car though, love the old schoolers.
