    Need help! ECU thinks I have an automatic transmission.

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Everything was put together for my big turbo build. When running the motor, I'm getting 4 HARD codes that is throwing a CEL. 3 of the 4 codes looks as though it's looking for a TCU. That's fine if I have an automatic transmission, but I have a manual transmission. This is the spare ECU I bought to have coded for the big turbo software. I think the original A4 for that ECU was an automatic.

    Here's the scan:

    Code:

    I think the ecu needs re-tuned. IIRC im not sure there is a way even with VAG-com to fix that one.. that blows

    what's the ECu p/n?

    Judging by what John (diagnosticator) said in Tyler's 3.0-1.8 thread I think you have to recode the ECu. I think this can be done with VAG-Com. PM John and ask him. Report back the details (or PM me) please.

    Why did you go with Unitronics for a GTRS?

    This is the ECU P/N : 8E0 909 518 AK

    The eBay listing didn't mention if it had an automatic or manual transmission. Only that it would work on any 1.8T engine.

    I poked around in ETKA a bit...that part number has been superseded to 8E0 909 528 GX (it's noted), but they come up as the correct ECU for my car when I plug in my VIN, and my car has a 6-speed manual transmission and quattro. Not sure if that helps at all...

    from my two posts you can see that the Transmission coding is in the brake electronics which should explain your brake fault codes.

    Update: only needed to change the engine code. It was set to 16751 which breaks down to:

    16 = US country code
    7 = quattro w/ ESP
    5 = automatic transmission
    1 = ECU installed in an A4

    Changed the code to 16701. The 0 = manual transmission. All codes are now gone!

    The upgrade is a huge improvement over the K04 setup I had. I'm about 98% completed with the build and expect to have the rest done in 2 weeks. I don't have any reliable AWD dynos in Northeast Ohio. Once everything is done and complete, I will be looking around for one. I'm getting 22-23 psi peak boost which is just fine.

    because there is no reason to when REVO has a flawless programming for the GTRS.

    I haven't seen performance that is above and beyond from an unitronic tuned car yet. I also have not seen any flawless operation from any unitronic tuned car. Each car has some small problem whether its cold starts or hot restarts or other stuff like that. Stuff no one posts up about on the forums but if you talk to owners on the phone or in person they'll admit to it.

    I chose Unitronic because of local support. That's basically the main reason - local support in case anything goes wrong. I won't hide any issues in hopes that the more it's brought forward, the issue can be addressed and resolved to help everyone.
