    New DIY, Trunk Accessory Plug

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've posted a new DIY on my site for installing the 12v plug that was available to the ROW. It is written so that you would do it without removing the panel. If anyone is unsure of the method and would like to do it with the panel removed I will be showing how to pull everything apart when I do the heated rear seat install.

I'm speculating that it can be done without removing the panel.

So enjoy. Another little project brought to the Audizine group first.

Another great DIY, David. The DIY doesn't actually seem that difficult; I just have very little confidence in my electrical-wiring abilities lol. I may have missed something but... the fuse panel referenced is the one on the side of the dash on the driver-side or is there one in the trunk?

Does the power stay "on" even with the car turned off?

The fuse panel is the one in the trunk so you don't have to run any real wiring. Its really almost plug and play.

No the power is the same as the others in the car. If you check the manual you will see all of the power outlets are on the same fuse block. I'm not sure if one of the other fuse blocks has power all the time but if it does you can always install the power outlet in a different block. I'll check later to see if there is a constant power. Your other alternative would be to run the power power directly to the battery but then you'd have to add your own fuse and you loose any protection against the battery going dead.

    David,
Not sure exactly where you use these parts:

    1 - 1J0 919 321 - Electrical plug (for accessory outlet)
    2 - 000 979 227 E- Wires for plug and fuse holder

Is 321 the the little gray jumper piece that connects to the fuse box? Are the two wires, just plain-old wires? Could any old low-gauge wires work just as well?

321 is the actual plug that plugs into the bottom of the accessory outlet. It comes with out wires so you need to get the wires separately which is what 227 is. You can use any one wire to extend them to the length you need but you still need the proper ends which is why you have to order the wires I listed.

    The "cheap way" out...

Love the mod, but not the cost... Especially those wires, which Audi charges about $20 a piece. That is pretty rough considering that all we really need is the little connector that goes into the back of the fuse panel. So, it is time for the "cheap" way out... This modification to DavidB8's instructions leave you a little less than factory, but I think it is worthwhile.

First, you will no longer need or order:
    1 - 1J0 919 321 - Electrical plug (for accessory outlet)
    2 - 000 979 227 E- Wires for plug and fuse holder
    1 - 000 979 230 E

Second, you will need some other non-Audi parts:
    2 - 1/4" Female Crimp-On Quick Disconnects - Radio Shack 64-4039 (1 package @ $1.99)
    1 - 1/4" Insulated Ring Connector - Radio Shack 64-3120 (1 package @ $1.99)
2 - 18" pieces of wire. I found myself an old PC power cord and cut that up.
1 - Tyco Electronics Timer Contact, Part Number 926965-1. This is the piece that the fuse will plug into. You can find the specs here: http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catal...?RQPN=926965-1. I won't point out the fact that, if you ask nicely at that web site, you can get a few free samples... Get extras so you can hard wire in your radar detector nicely too.

    Time to make your wires
The ground wire will have a Crimp-On Disconnect at one end and the Ring Connector at the other. The hot wire will have a Crimp-On Disconnect at one end and the Timer Contact at the other. Make your wires (a nice pair of pliers helps here).

    Connecting your wires
The Crimp-On wires go to the bottom of the Accessory Socket. There are three places they can connect to on the socket. The hot wire goes to the bronze connector in the middle. The ground wire goes to the only other bronze connector. The silver connector is left unused. The rest of the wiring should be done exactly as David says.

Hope this is useful to someone.

    Audi OEM wiring connector tips

Took me a while to find just the Audi OEM wire tips. I thought everyone else may save the multiple google searches:

    http://www.intengineering.com/VW-Aud...-p6470995.html

Minimum shipping for me was $7...so that kinda blows but it still beats $20 for the Audi wires that have the tips already on them.

I really like the mod for my E350 coupe. For whatever reason, Mercedes does not put a 12v outlet anywhere other than the ashtrays.

Just finished doing this mod. Had a problem because I put the ground wire in the wrong spot in the clip/harness. I must slow down when doing things! Anyway, swapped the wires and now I have power in the trunk. This is a small mod but an important one for me! Thanks Dave! Have you ever thought about putting a light (LED) in that compartment ? It's quite deep and dark! (That sounded bad)

I just finished this mod on our 2009 A4Q Premium Plus using mostly salvaged parts found on eBay (B7 power outlet 8E0-919-309 and wire harness plug 1J0 919 321 located separately), while the fuse block wire/connector (000-979-227-E) came from a dealer at a reasonable price.

When I opened the red fuse holder, I found that the first set of fuse positions (1 through 4) didn't share a common bus as shown in DavidB8's DIY:

Instead, fuse positions 1, 2, and 4 are wired individually; position 3 isn't wired on our car! Positions 5 through 12, however, are on a switched bus fed by a relatively large diameter black wire, with only position 12 (air bag system?) in use with a 5A fuse. So, I put the fuse block connector in position 7 (labeled as "unused" in the manual), and we now have a working switched & fused 15A 12V outlet in our trunk.

Back again, this time with a 2014 A4Q Premium Plus; we sold the 2009 A4Q from the previous post a couple months back.

Fuse Panel F (right rear) in our B8.5 has only fuse blocks ST2 (black), ST3 (brown), and ST5 (black) in the panel carrier, and best I can tell from the wiring diagrams, all have unswitched busses. All cabin sockets are now switched through relay J807 in position E of Fuse Panel F (from Fuse 2 of ST3). In our case, I think an unswitched 12V socket in the luggage compartment is reasonable, so I added the new 15A 12V socket circuit to position/fuse 1 of ST2 (black).

I decided to pull the right interior trim panel for better access to the Fuse Panel F and to cut the socket hole in the trim panel shelf, which required removing the rear seat.

Best to have a couple spare grommets (4L0886373) when putting the rear seat back in. --g
