Hey guys, Ive got a 00 b5 2.8 with 100k on it. Thinking about buying some Castrol Syntec 5w-40 for my next oilchange as Mobil 1 0w-40 is crazy expensive here $10/L and Crappy Tire aka. Canadian Tire has 4l Of syntec on sale for $24.99.

    ...and GO!

sweet, thanks. Also, this is the first oil change im doing with my audi and I dont know it the p/o used conventional oil or synthetic...would there be any complications simply switching if it was the case of him using conventional and also can I just jack up the passenger side on an axle stand to let it drain or should it fully drain while completely level on both axle stands.

oh and whats the capactity of a 2.8 .. 5quarts?

Use 0W-30 from Castrol. That is the German made stuff that most people use if they use castrol.

Not a big deal to switch from one to the other. 2.8l should use 5.3 quarts if completely empty

Castrol Syntec would be perfect. The syntec 5w-40 is actually Audi/VW 502 certified, so it is on the official list or whatever.

That said, the Audi 2.8 V6 is much much easier on motor oil as compared to the 1.8T. They just run much cleaner and don't bake the oil with a turbo. With a synthetic oil like the Syntec, you could easily do 5k miles for the oil change interval without issue.

Yeah, you gotta know your car too. Trip length, temperature, previous maintenance (or lack thereof), etc. can all be a factor. There's a 30v B5 that comes to our shop for Oil change about every 4k. The oil comes out almost golden. My 1.8T's oil is black by 2k.

@deltaforce: "Audi recommended" 10k interval is what got them into trouble with the 1.8T sludge issues. Even with synthetic, 10k is too long IMHO. I'd like my engine to see 200k+ miles.

9-10k on a 1.8T?! after putting the oil in and turning the car on, its already black on our turbocharged engines. I do my oil change every 3-4k, depending on how lazy I feel.

The manual says 0w-30 or 5w-40 depending on your climate....if you change your oil every 3-5k miles, then you should be good.
A little of this and a little of that.......I like go, not show.

well i also performed my own engine flush about a year ago using bg dynamic engine cleaner (specially developed with audi/vw group), including replacing my pickup tube. at 95k miles the tube was only half clogged with no idea of previous repair history. ive seen pickup tubes on sludge motors that only have 1-3 specs of light shine through. thats what causes oil starvation and burned up bearings. also, just because synthetic oil is dark or "black" doesnt mean its lost its lubricating properties, and a large oem filter is designed to last even longer than 10k if it needs to. in some parts of europe, they change the oil only at 15,000 km and then change the filter with the oil at 30. the reasoning is that they dont want to waste the metal due to it being scarce, which is the same reason most european makes use cartridge filters as opposed to canister style.

ive only used synthetic since ive had it, i dont rev above 5k, dont boost until at operating temps and my engine is mostly stock with a voluntarily rebuilt k03s. im not worried about sludge. what about you?

do you guys think I should seafoam my 2.8? Its at 100k and never done before...the thing is, the car sat for a year at the previous owners house and the oil pressure is now low...to seafoam or not to seafoam...I figure I might as well as Im about to change the oil and it gets contaminated right?

Any dangers as to seafoaming with low oil pressure?

A place between here and there

This thread makes me want to change my oil pick up screen (and pump). I have Amsoil engine flush, but am timid to use it because I don't know what would happen afterwards.

Also, I was told that the only Castrol Syntec which is full synthetic (group iv) is the German made one. But I am led to believe that the Edge is full synthetic, which is already being used in Germany. I don't drive much, so I only need to change my oil 2 times a year. Once before winter (still have not changed my oil yet), and once after. I use Amsoil 5w40 in the summer and 0w30 in the winter.

an oil is only as good as it's additive package, I would much rather have more detergents in a Group III than a Group IV that's going to leave more deposits. but that's a topic for BITOG.
