    P1654 Coolant Temp Sensor G2 & Ignition Coil Question (Help Please)

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Today is officially when my spring break starts, and my car gave me an awesome present of blowing a coilpack right when I left school....

    Anyway, I took the car to the Audi stealership and they replaced all 4 for free, so no biggie. So my first question; I know that the cat can get fouled after driving on a CP blowout. How long can you drive before the cat dies? I reset my trip timer and it took me exactly 5 miles from my school to the dealer. Is that enough for the cat to foul or am I alright?

    Next up, they scanned the car and found the CP code (obviously) but they also found another code, which is the "Coolant Temperature Sensor G2." I have no idea what that is, and I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.

    I took some pics of the diagnosis report that they gave me

    P1654 is just a code that tells you to check the instrument cluster DTC memory. What they found in the memory was an intermittent open or short circuit to the G2 coolant temperature sensor. The four pin G62 ECT sensor that is located on the back of your motor is a four pin sensor that is really two sensors combined into one. The G2 portion of the sensor sends a signal to the temperature indicator in the instrument cluster. The other part of the sensor is used by the ECU to monitor the overall performance of the cooling system. The problem could be with the sensor or the wiring harness.

    Thanks OG. Does this need immediate attention? Cause the Audi tech said that this could be causing my car to run too rich or too lean. (which doesn't make sense according to what you said, and I trust your car know how more than his)

    Yes that is possible if the ECU portion of the sensor is reading incorrectly. However your code indicates that it is the G2 portion of the sensor that is malfunctioning. I would recommend going ahead and replacing the sensor. It is not an expensive part and can be changed out in about 15 minutes.

    Where can I get the part? (Audi quoted me for $225 for JUST the part....I almost started laughing)

    Regarding your cat...no, 5 miles didn't foul your cat. I've heard people take different sides regarding the fuel injectors shutting of if there's no spark, but regardless of which way it works, you're fine.

    Thanks Greg, that's good to know. I've been freaking out for the past 2 hours hoping it won't foul, cause I've had that happen already, and I don't feel like shelling out that kind of cash to replace it.

    Look up one post. Added another link. Be sure to purchase several of the plastic clips in case you drop or break one. Cheap insurance.

    I found it;

    Just to make sure, this is the right thing, right? http://www.europaparts.com/coolant-t...59919501a.html

    Is that all that I need or should I get the clip and gasket as well?

    Edit: Nevermind, OG, you and I posted at the same time lol

    Yes. I don't recommend reusing the "O" ring.
