    Question Leaking Engine Mounts

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

I have an 06' A4 2.0T at the dealer shop. They tell me the engine mounts are leaking fluid and should be replaced. As result of the mounts, the engine sits a little lower. The parts alone are $400 plus (two mounts) and another $500 or so for labor. Do you guys think this repair is needed? If I drive around with leaking mounts, are there any long term consequences as a result of not having this issue corrected now?

Thanks in advance for any help on this issue.

Yeah I'm no expert too but I think You should fix that. Engine might put extra weight on Your gear box and that can lead to big trouble.. but $500 for labor? maybe someone else can change them for You?

You can get away without replacing them for a little bit, but they need to be on your short list to get replaced. $500 labor is ridiculous, its an easy enough job to DIY (I did it on my B6 a few weeks ago). That price for parts is also really high...if you want a price on new OEM motor mounts, let me know.

Not to scare you, but this is what I encountered when I took my engine mounts out. They were "leaking" and "squished" to say the least.
The ones in comparison are OEM b5 RS4 engine mounts.
    Squished:

    Leaking:

    Reason I replaced them:
Driver side, casing cracked not even sure how honestly.

Pssenger side, This one broke when my snub mount bracket broke, the whole engine fell forward and guess it just ripped.

I recommend looking on ECS for a set of B5 S4 mounts, much cheaper than $400 and much better "stiffer" ride. Im sure a local shop would be able to do the install for MUCH less than $500.

Pretty common failure on the motor mounts. When you start modifying the motor with a chip, exhaust, intake, etc and you're putting out more power, you need stiffer mounts to put the power to the wheels, otherwise you'll just rip out your stock ones. Our Stern motor mounts are the way to go. Solid mounts so they don't leak. Plus we have the circuitry available to override those cars that have sensors on their mounts as well.

Thanks everyone for all the good information. I think I will look for a local indy shop to replace the mounts.

So once you start modifying a car, how prone are these to fail? Is there about an average mileage that these should be replaced?

I had mine replaced last month. It only leaked when I drove in sport mode and the torque just shifted the hell out of the engine. They were covered under CPO warranty but the cost was around $600. Parts were $200 each + labor. I'm at 50k miles.

They should be replaced to avoid stress on other componenfs. I installed 034 street density mounts a few months ago and am very happy with them. Did the snub mount at the same time. Parts were about $225. A 13mm GearWrench 9554 13mm Stubby Flex-Head Combination Ratcheting Wrench or something similar is highly recommended for the passenger side.

I also have 034 street density mounts. Passenger side was a serious pain in the dick to install but well worth doing it myself. Only had $190 in the job.

So besides motor mounts, what is recommended to change out if you beat on your car? Serious question.

Really depends on what you have done to it and how you are beating on it. Personally I always start with tires suspension and brakes. Then did snub and later engine mounts and 034 catch can. Then when my balance shafts seized I added IE forged rods. May want to change out your dv to the piston style if getting tuned.

Huh. Interesting. I was having something fixed on my car and dealership also stated I have lose mounts. Not leaking nor broken. To fix would cost me $1200. What's the input on that peeps? No jolt or anything resembling engine mount nor transmission mount issues. My problem is that whenever they tell me I need something done, I end up needing it 6 months later so is it worth it or might as well get new ones?

1200? I'll do it for 900 . But seriously, it is DIY able if you grab the right tools and have a good space to work. Save yourself about a grand.

Yeah it's not difficult even on the passenger side. A 13mm flex head ratchet ringy is all you need. I didn't even need to drop the sway bar.

Dumb question, the mounts aren't active correct?

@geoffafa I know your post was long time ago, but if you are still on this thread or anyone who have tried.

Are there any ill-effects of using B5 RS4 or B5 S4 mounts on B7 other than requiring resistors for the connectors? Planning on changing the mounts as soon as it gets a little warmer, but don't necessarily want to go 034 or OEM B7 (expensive for what they are). I read in some post that the height of the mounts are different for B5 S4 and B7 A4. Is it that big of a deal? I think I read even 034 mounts are taller than OEM.

B7 A4's don't need resistors... all you will see is a soft code... if you scan with vag com. No christmas tree lights on the dash.

Automatics have an active mount on the driver's side. Changes an orifice to vary stiffness.

both of my mounts had a connector, pax and driver side. I just clipped em and put in some cheap solid mounts.

I think there is a split in 2007 where they went from one active mount to two.

None of the photos in that link work any longer.. I'd like to take a look, but to see how to do so on my 2004 A8L D3. The left engine mount needs to be replaced.
