People use that weight oil on higher mileage vehicles, and others simply don't bother. I myself use 5w40 in the summer and 0w30 in the winter (128k on motor). The brand I use is also "not" on that Audi apporved list. But whatever you do, be sure to use full synthetic motor oil. Many use Group III, but you would want a Group IV motor oil.

You would need to wait for someone else to chimme in to answer that. But as far as I know, there shouldn't be an issue running that weight motor oil. You plan on running that same motor oil (weight) on your next change?

i believe so, unless something's wrong with that grade oil, i've driven the car about 200 miles since the oil change so ya, long way before i do another oil change.

I don't know how cold it gets in San Jose, but you may want to take that into consideration when choosing your oil for the winter season.
