One of my friends is an Audi tech and i was between a B6 1.8T and a B5 S4. He said long run the S4 will be more problematic, more expensive, and less enjoyable because of the constant problems. Another problem besides blowing the turbos and expensive maintenance is the cam tensioner. I've heard about people going through them all the time. In my opinion, build your 1.8 up. It will be more reliable and more economical than a B5 S4

CrtchRktRcr: You could turn it into a unicorn with a gigantic pink dildo and i'd still love a b5s4.

if you have the money to buy a b5, why don't you put that money into upgrading your B6. nothing against the b5 but its double everything if not taken care of. Also double everything of your B6 when it comes to maintenance. although it can be a hit or miss when buying one just like it can be with the B6 or any car for that matter. Search is your best friend, and I dont mean just searching within Audizine. Do you homework read up on the vehicle as much as possible. Good Luck with what ever decission you make .

the b6 just doesnt respond to mods the way other cars do. i come from the dsm world where about $1500 in mods gets me 350whp and the b6 i just too heavy for the 1.8t motor. maintenance isnt an issue for me because i am a big diy and i will be working for audi pretty soon.

There are a lot of helpful resources on this site, such as a FAQ forum at the top and a Wiki link posted at the top of this forum. Here:( http://www.audizine.com/wiki/index.php?title=B5_S4 ) From there if you don't know any details on specifics, get to know the search function. This chassis is 10 years old, and just about every problem with them is known, and has been posted repeatedly. Plan on having extra cash saved for an emergency repair, every s4 needs it.

I totally understand where you are coming from and whole heartedly agree. Heck I've had my fair share of STi/evo/MKIV TT Supra so I know that the japanese vehicles are built for speed not comfort like the German vehicles are(Hence their weight). IF you are a DIYer then please proceed.

there goes your $1500... and no hp gain. This is a whole different type of ball game. Buy a stage 3 unless you are looking for a project or an excuse to take Excedrin.

If that has you worried, you have no idea of what you are in for. A good candidate for owning an S4 would have spend a few days of his life reading these forums and realize what he's up against. Executive summary, great second car, bad choice for a daily driver unless you have deep pockets for rentals and repairs.

Yep, just like the 1.8's and the 2.8's. Along with the cam tensioner seals that are underneath the valve covers. Nothing out of the ordinary for a VW/Audi product though.
