DIY - Surround lighting under side mirrors - like A6 and above (NOT FOR MY2010 - YET)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Thanks to lover18gue @ motor-talk.de for showing how to retrofit the Surround lighting from an A6

    http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/umfel...-t2406351.html

    All this is needed:

The lower mirror trim from A6 (4F) because the mirrors are indeed the same, thanks to the Face-lift.

    1x Trim for the left exterior mirror housings m. Hole:Part #: 4F0 858 523 B 01C - Satin Black
    1x Trim for the right exterior mirror housings m. Hole: Part #: 4F0 858 524 B 01C - Satin Black

Mount point on trim without LEDs:

Mount point on trim with LEDs:

    1x Surround lighting LED left: Part #: 4F0 949 133
    1x Surround lighting LED right: Part #: 4F0 949 134

2x Small screws for mounting the LEDs to the trim

    2x 2-pin connector: Part #: 823 971 988
    2x Wire: Part #: 000 979 103

    1x Wire: Part #: 000 979 009

    12V line connection:

    1. Remove door panels, driver and passenger side - http://www.gsbg-tuning.de/tuerverkle...emontageb8.pdf
    2. Cut the wire 000 979 009 in the middle. Put one end of the wire into pin 1 of the black connector that leads from the door control unit to the mirror.
    3. Maybe you need to extend the cable, and then put it up into the mirror housing.
    4. Put one end of one of the wires 000 979 103 into one of the 2-pin connectors 823 971 988, and then cut it in the middle. One end of the wire is connected to the earlier 12V line, and the other end is connected to ground.

    Exterior mirror housings Dismantle:
    1. Pull the mirror glass with your hands forward toward your body, unplug any plug on the back of the mirror (heating and dimming plug).
    2. Remove mirror housing top upwards, this is sticking with 2x Torx10 screws and some clips.
    3. Remove the lower mirror trim, this is sticking with 2x Torx10 screws and some clips.
    4. Mount the new lower mirror trim - remember to screw on the Surround lighting LED first with a small screw.
    5. Connect the Surround lighting with the connector 823 971 988.
    6. Mirror reassemble.

    Unlock the door control:

    Code:
    [42 - Door Elect, Driver]
    [Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper -> Byte 1

    Bit 0 - Set this bit manually to “1” - (1 = active)
    Code:
    [52 - Door Elect, Pass.]
    [Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper -> Byte 1

    Bit 0 - Set this bit manually to “1” - (1 = active)
    Function:
It should work together with the Coming- Leaving Home functionality.
If the mirrors are electrically folded in the lights will be short off immediately, and will work again when the mirrors are folded out.

Thats cool, but just looked and that would be a $500 plus mod unless you can get a used set off of ebay. Not for the 2010... Thats racist. ;)

isnt this a bit redundant with puddle lights on the bottoms of the doors? or do the A4/S4's not get those like the A5/S5's do?

Oh we get the puddle lights but these would light up with the coming home leaving home so you can see before you get to the car instead of after opening the door. Given it's the pinnacle of what else can I do to my car but it's neat.

I'm not sure if you would need the entire mirror for this or not. I see a cheap $12 trim part with a hole in it listed in ETKA and I'm wondering if you could just change the trim to the one with the hole. Mind you the lights are about $100 a piece. When I pull my mirrors off to go to folding I'll look.

I have no idea what your talking about.. Indecently the A6 doesn't have any options for illuminated door handles.. The A8 does though

That is the whole idea - you don't need to change the whole mirror, only the small trim under the mirror, so the LEDs can be mounted.

    The trim is 2 x EUR 3.57 and the LEDs cost 2 x EUR 29.57 - plus wires (~EUR 5) and a single 2-pin connector (EUR 1.12)

The reason why it doesn't work on MY2010 is because the mirrors on the face-lifted A6 has the same mirrors as the pre-MY2010 B8s - and until now there are no mirrors with LEDs that has the same size and shape as the new mirrors on MY2010 B8s - maybe they will fit from the new A8??

Sorry I miss understood the post.. Not speaking German and all :)

What I don't get about the door handle one you posted is why the guy didn't just tap the module like what is listed for the mirrors. Would have saved a lot of wiring. Maybe that car is pre mirror lighting.
Those prices are are less than half of what the parts would cost here. You guys get all the breaks..

    OK so:
A8 doesn't have the same mirrors. No trim part available. Well except for the add on trim for the flashing lights that come on the armoured version.
Q5 Has the lights but you can't buy the trim so thats out.
A6 hasn't changed parts for 2011 so it still wont work..

This sucks.. But I wonder if it's just a hole and the light clips in or if it's specially molded. If it's just a hole then cutting one out may work.

Yes, it should only be the hole that would be needed to be cut out of the existing trim, and then to mount the LED in it.

The 2011 shows the same part numbers. So either it hasn't changed or they haven't released the real part numbers. I don't suppose you could request a picture of the actual trim part on the German board? If it is just a hole I will order the regular trim and try cutting them out.

    Never mind.. Found one:

Now to find a picture of the light to confirm it doesn't need any of the parts around it to clip in. Need make sure it clips into the hole alone. May be possible to cut the hole out if it does.

If you look at the photos: http://www.motor-talk.de/bilder/umfe...203027399.html

Then you navigate to photo 3 and 5 - then it is pin 1 you get the 12V from (when it is enabled via VCDS)

The VCDS coding is this one:

    Code:
    [42 - Door Elect, Driver]
    [Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper -> Byte 1

    Bit 0 - Set this bit manually to “1” - (1 = active)
    Code:
    [52 - Door Elect, Pass.]
    [Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper -> Byte 1

    Bit 0 - Set this bit manually to “1” - (1 = active)

All the parts add up to $158.82 from Genuineaudivwparts.com. Of course it will yet to be seen if they can fill the order as I have yet to have one completed yet by them. I'm hoping to have the parts in time to incorperate them into the folding mirror install. Since I'll have to cut the hole to have these work on the 2010 it should be interesting. I guess I play guinea pig again...

It's not a matter of if it's when

I've got all the parts coming. I'm pretty sure I have found all the coding and will confirm with anther member who has just offered his coding and the rest would be in the wiring which should all be from the door module so that shouldn't be painful. I have to get this one. To much invested into it. Worse case is the door module doesn't support it and they are cheap on eBay.de

    Me again...
one could always use 10mm or 8mm leds. We know its a 12v feed and have access to the correct controller so why spend money on the under mirror lights( 4f0949133/134) and the trim unnecessarily!

it appears on the BMW 7 series its done via fiber optics... they channel the light from elsewhere to below the lock.: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...37&hg=63&fg=30

on the E92's it appears to be an LED module below the lock mechanism: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...15&hg=63&fg=30

Well I noticed today that the new A8 (2011) has the same style door handles as we do. So i would say lets wait a few months and I'll look into what they are doing for lighting.

I've now installed the new LED in my driver side mirror, and I have updated the DIY with more Photos and the connect plan for the 2-pin connector (it has to be done this way, otherwise the LED won't work)

Hopefully next weekend I'll do the passenger side (I am one 2-pin connector short because there was only ordered one when I pick up the parts).

Hopefully I will have all the parts here including my folding mirrors in the next week. The only part didn't get was one of the trim parts. I ordered them just to use as templates but one wasn't available in the US I guess. I'll try and expand the DIY with the 2010 since I am cutting the trim out for the bulbs.

It is also a good idea to un-mount the entire side mirror - otherwise it isn't possible to get the 12V wire into the mirror housing, and there are not that much space inside the mirror if the "Side Assist" is present.

I also need to replace the left "Side Assist" LED, because it was "kicked" out of the mirror housing, so the small tabs was destroyed - due to the new 12V wire was placed at a wrong place.

ok, ive just done this mod to one side for now and not too impressed with the way the light comes on and then goes off. Unlock car- mirrors still folded into car- light is off- get in and key in ignition- mirrors fold out- take key out of ignition- light comes on- lock car, mirrors fold and light goes off 3-4secs after locking.
Ideally these should be linked into the ch/lh function with control in the mmi for timing the whole lot. Would like to see them come on when you unlock the car as you approach it so you can see whats on the floor and again come on when you get out and and stay on as long as the front fogs are on with the lh function.
Only way i can see it being used like this is for the led wiring to be tapped into the front fog liight wire. Yes ok these would come on when the front fogs get switvhed on but hey we hardly use them here anyway.

If the mirrors are not folded in it will work as it should - it is also written in the DIY under the function section.

Yes - you can try it out

It is working this way because the lights will not be to much help when the mirrors are folded in.

Ok i set the mirrors not to fold and they work exactly in time with the ch/Lh function. ie come one when you unlock and stay on when you lock until the lights go off BUT i dont have folding mirrors now!! Sucks!
The lights are actually still quite good at illuminating the ground with the mirrors folded.
ANYWAY we can set them to work with the mirrors folded as they do when they are unfolded???
