do you need a vag to replace airbag module

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i just got my airbag control module back from airbagsystems.com pluged it up and the airbag light is still on. From what other people have told me you can just hook it up and the light will go away. yes the code i got intially was for the control module. Do i need a vag com to reprogram it or did the company not fix the problem. i do not have a vag com yet and am debating on goin the ebay route. is that stupid or should i just pony up the 260 for the vag com.

Unplug your battery for 15 minutes, let the ecu reset. If that doesn't work, then yes you need to reset it with VagCom.

I know you got a cable, but for future searches your can only clear an airbag light with a cable, the battery trick doesn't work.

its 260 for a vagcom? my airbag light is on to. and i believe when it got scanned over a year ago it pointed to the air bag module. so you sent your original module to airbagsystems.com for repair? how much did it cost you?

You can get a USB OBD II diagnostic cable and free-ware version of vagcom from ross-tech. Click here for USB scan cables. Just hook up a USB cable to a laptop and you can scan codes/reset modules and CEL's.

It will fail an inspection but the car functions without. However, in case of an accident no airbags will deploy. You really ought to replace/repair the module for safety.

In NY your car doesn't fail inspection with an airbag light on, don't know about other states.

Also, depending on what's wrong with the module airbags most likely will still deploy. They go into a default stage when there's a fault in the airbag system.

It's a warning they put in to cover themselves for people who don't know what they're doing and change values in the control module possibly causing problems. You can scan the airbag module without an issue and clear the code.

Mine says that too. I just said "ok" and scanned/cleared it.

PS... the title of this cracks me up. No you dont need a VAG to fix it. I have a penis and I did it just fine. :)
I hate the term VAG-COM. At least its not Volkswagen Auto Group / German Auto Group. Then it would be a VAG-GAG-COM. Ew.

Sorry to thread jack but this relates to the thread... my airbag light comes on sometimes on a very cold start and then flickers and turns off after a few minutes? When Its above 35 degrees it doesn't pop on. Is it the module or a fuse problem?

Possible battery issue too. Low voltage does some freaky things to these cars.

i clear the light by sending the control module to airbagsystems.com and then put it back in. after that the light was still on so to make sure it was not something else i cleared the codes. after that i cranked the car up and the light was not on any more.

    OP - You're the man.

I'm going to send my module to this place to repair mine.. Mine recently went for absolutely no reason during a seat install... Freakin cars! I was going to pay a good price of 250 for another one, but this is an awesome option.

Same symptoms I had before it sh!t the bed entirely. You are now in the market for a replacement module. I bought a used one on eBay for ~$50, installed and reprogrammed with genuine VAGCOM SW (had to tell it I had an Avant) and all is well for the past ~1.5 years. All lights out and no errors...good luck!

BTW - State inspection in MA no longer allows AIRBAG lights...but ABS faults are still cool:\

Can you update this thread when you get yours back? I'd like to know if I'll need to borrow my buddy's VAG-com to clear any codes if I get mine done here. Thanks OP for the info.

I've got another friend with a C5 A6 2.7T with the same problem. Anyone know if our cars share the same module and also if the removal is the same, behind the radio right?

My A4 had a "resistance too high" airbag code on the passenger airbag...i could fix it by spraying some electrical terminal cleaner into the plug about every 3 months...
Anyway crashed the shit out of my car while the airbag light was on and NONE of the airbags deployed; i HIGHLY recommend getting your airbag(s) fixed before driving, after all you don't know you miss them until you need them and they don't work!
