    So my wheel fell off....

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Had a service appointment scheduled yesterday.. left the house, then realized i left my cc at home, turned around...then i stopped at the light not too far away from home. and when i started to drive again.. i heard this noise sounding like a flat tire - i was like wtf?! my tpms was ok - i pulled over checked all the wheels and tires and nada.. i was a block away from home so i got back in the car, called my buddy at service and as i am telling him whats going on, i began to pull into my driveway - and thats when it happend CRACKKK!! - my right front wheel was off and my cars fender was resting on the tire. - i look closer and i only see one lug left and its not even connected.. i look out and i see another lug 40 feet out.. I jack up my car and wheel comes off.. my hub is bent, lug holes are stripped, wheel has chunks missing out of it.. and holes in my V709's are stretched out into ovals.. WTFF!!!! My wheels haven't been touched in almost 8k mi - so its not like someone forgot to screw something... so pissed. - but AudiCare towed my car to the dealer ( where i saw my dad's A8 , apparently his suspension compressor gave out and it looks like a lowrider ) - back in A6 for now..

Does anyone know (when / if I have to go through insurance will it be my comprehensive or collision that covers this? )- I saw this stuff on YouTube when people track their cars but street driving... never thought it'd happen to me.. ever...

Yeah but its kind of ballsy since the wheel that they tried to take off is less than 15ft away from my window.. plus when i first left the house everything was fine for like 10 min..only on a way home i started to hear the noise.. its just weird... I dont even know what could cause the bolt holes in the wheel to be stretched like that..

P.S - no i didn't hit a pothole...and wheel is very much not bent. though i think one of the gashes in the wheel is deep enough to leak air.. tire went flat but there are no holes in it.

I highly doubt it, VMR makes great reps, good enough for dealers to use them. Besides, other ppo would of said something if they were, considering there are a loooooot of people here sporting VMRs

Same thing happened to me, but ended up nothing going bad as you. I have to assume someone tried to steel my LM reps, but got scared away since it was parked in the middle of downtown Seattle.

Drove home 25 miles with horroble sound. Got home, luckily, and since i wasn't sure what the problem was i had Audi tow the car in. Service depo saw i have 3 lugs missing and only 1 still holding the wheel on and 1 about to fall out!

I vote someone doesn't like you and wanted to FCUK your world up!!

    Correct lugs?
Happened to me in my previous car, I changed wheels and the lugs were not long enough and also lost a wheel.

wow that sucks, at least this didn't happen on the freeway, it could've ended up a lot worse. Were you using your OEM lugbolts? PM me, if you want to replace your damaged wheel, I can give you a discount

yeah I am so glad it wasn't on the fwy. Bolts were OEM, - all wheels seemed ok, tight before i towed the car in.. I had to take a lug out of other 3 wheels to put it back on for tow. It's just weird because i would of seen bolts gone and when i got out of the car to check for the noise everything was still there - just a pain in the butt.. I'll definitely call you guys to get replacement - I will probably order a set of something for A6 as well..

    Thanks so much guys.

This happened a few years ago when my ex was driving one of my B5s. Someone had likely tried to steal the wheels on the car earlier, (we found 2 of the wheel bolts next to her parking spot in the garage she used to park in) by the time she got where she was going, the wheel was barely attached. The Tire Rack was really helpful with getting us a replacement wheel and bolts.

The holes get ovalized as the wheel is wobbling back and forth on the loose bolts. It has nothing to do with the materials used, even an expensive forged wheel will do the same.

Just got a call from the dealer, no damage other than wheel being messed up ( huh - my hub was bent and threads were stripped ) they said lugs most likely were the reason... not correct size - ( b.s. IMO) all other bolts are fine.. not to mention all those V708's that dealers slap on, re-use the OEM bolts...

to VMR guys for helping out!!

I've always thought that aftermarket wheels required conical bolts versus OEM needing ballseat? Is this not true with VMR?
If it is, couldn't that be a possible factor in the OP's problem?

While most aftermarket are conical, VMR's are designed to use the factory ballseat lugbolts. This definitely has nothing to do with the quality of their wheels.

That's really sucks dude. It definitely sounds like somebody tried to steal yours wheels. Get yourself a set of wheel locks (which reminds me, I need those too)

let vmr confirm or not if they use oem bolts, I assume yes.

first off, sorry to hear about this at least it's just a wheel. I would suspect someone was trying to steal your wheels, kinda hard to have your lugs just fall off ya know OR someone out to get you....

Not quite on the freeway, but going about 40mph I have had a wheel come off, it was definitely not a pleasant experience, and I am sure for the person driving the car that my wheel hit the experience was even less pleasant! I had heard a knocking noise, figured I would pull over at the next safe place (the road I was on I usually drive about 60mph) right after that though the wheel comes off, cue panic mode of stopping the car, my last vision of the wheel was it literally flying back over the roof of my car after hitting someone on the other side of the road square in the center of the hood, looked like they had driven into a pole.

Not just a wheel, hub is bent, ( not sure but threads are most likely stripped ) because fender sat on the tire fender is pushed in a bit, side skirt ( left is cracked a little where the jack was ), someone who helped me put a jack in a wrong place... and a little plastic clip holding the liner came out, bolts need replacing, tire is perhaps leaking air.. not sure..

but seriously glad to be alive. will be calling insurance tomorrow arrrr... - i went to take a look at the bolts in the parts dept, new ones are much more nifty - hollow heads, two piece bolt (ball bottom is separate) kind of cool, might replace all of em.

Down for the photoshoot! I'll hit you up after everything is nice and tidy again.

Our wheels are designed to take the OEM lugbolts of the manufacturer. Our Audi / VW fitments are ball seat, and our BMW fitments are conical
