Magnaflow 14815. Resonator or not? even more ?'s now

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Long story short, I bought a magnaflow 14815 for my new car and im having a terrible time trying to decide if i should keep the stock resonator or not. My old car has a very similar muffler with the resonator still on, and sounds awesome, but i wouldnt mind it being a little louder.

My biggest concern is rasp. I want NONE. i dont want any of that rice burner type fart can sound. i just want deep, smooth, but loud tones. So my question is, will removing the resonator make my exhaust louder but still sound good, or should i keep the resonator?

Thanks as always! Car is a 2.8 30v btw.
any sound clips would be amazing.

(check my last post. More questions.)

Without a center res there will be unbearable drone at highway speeds. From what I understand a straight through res like a cherry bomb set up is the best for noise without the drone

i would recommend getting an aftermarket resonator thats the same inlet/outlet diameter as your magnaflow's inlet is...

    or stock would work too

but you will drone like a MOFO if you dont, trust me (not sure on raspyness as i have a 1.8)

Yes, go with a resonator! You will get tired of your loud drone on the highway very fast. I don't have a 2.8 but I got a vibrant resonator with a 14815, which helped out a lot with the tone of the exhaust.

I have the same car, same exhaust with no resonator and i hate it. It drones like a stupid honda with a fart can. I liked my exhaust the best stock in the rear with the mid resonator straight piped. It had a nice vr6 type rasp but no drone whatsover. But then the stock rear muffler went bad and I replaced it with the same magnaflow, decent sound and tone but way too much drone. i would've had a middle resonator installed last summer but the dumb hicks at the muffler shop told me it would make the car louder. Stupid me for beleiving it. Just replace your stock resonator with an aftermarket one like these other guys recommended.

On my 1.8T I had a 2.5" cat back w/ the 14815 installed. it was unbearable. forget about listening to the radio. I went back a month later and had a 18" magnaflow resonator installed, and it is PERFECT now.

So how does Vibrant compare to Summitracing to Magnaflow? I guess Mag is out of the picture since that is the most money. But I also have this muffler in my garage, waiting to get money for 2.5'' turbo back. I was thinking about the 18'' Vibrant. Any arguments with that?

Hey rob, you talking somthing like this?

    http://www.summitracing.com/parts/JE...2S-5/?rtype=10

If thats the case, wow, cheapness. If you guys can say from experience this type of resonator with a magnaflow wont give me horrible drone and rasp, im sold!

AND ANOTHER question. If i were to swap my cats out with these
    http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-94025/
would i be able to avoid CEL's? Cheap as hell, and would probably increase the exhaust flow even more.
    Thats a future project.

But mostly my biggest question is still will this resonator
    http://www.summitracing.com/parts/JE...2S-5/?rtype=10
On a Magnaflow 14815 have no annoying obsessive drone or rasp?

mine is loud also but still sounds good and no cop problems.

yes that is the kind of resonator that we are talking about and damn those are cheap. i believe that that 1 would work well with your magnaflow, might be some highway drone but its manageable.

Jones Exhaust does not make a 2.5 in/out resonator :'(
Why are you keeping it stock 2.25'' piping? Just wondering.

resonators are silly, if you want a loud sound then dont use a res. if you want a stock sound, use a res. if your car sounding good is what you want then dont use a res or no one will hear your car unless they are standing right next to it.

^^ I don't think so. I have 2.5" exhaust with two 18" resonators, 14815 magnaflow and high flow cat and it is plenty loud. It has a nice deep tone with almost no interior drone. It doesn't sound anything like stock.

have you heard a unresonated magnaflowd 2.8 its god aweful to ride in. My car with a resonator can still set off car alarms.

    Few Q's for you:
    1. Does your car smog with the HFC? And what type is it?
    2. What kind resonators do you have?

I am looking to get a 2.5'' turbo back exhaust with the 14815 Mag on my 1.8 and I am just looking at different ways/ opinions from other people.

one more question for you all.

I have decided to rock a 18" resonator into a magnaflow muffler. Looking at the exhaust system, the two pipes run down the center of the car and meet at the center muffler aka reasonator, which brings it into one pipe. What do i do to bring those two pipes togeather and into the bullet resonator? A Y connecter? If so, what size are the two pipes running down the center of the car? they cant be 2.25, they're smaller right?

My car passes smog because my chip has the rear 02 coded out. But the HFC is custom 2.25" 250 cell. It would pass on a normal with the rear 02 spaced out a little.

The resonators are universal bullet style 18". They are located in the middle of the car.

I honestly love the sound, but I have to sacrifice a little drone for more hp with the test-pipe I'm installing. I couldn't stand the 2.5" 14815 setup without at least one resonator. There is a lot of drone. I don't know about you guys but I have lots of people in and out of my car and the number one complaint was drone.

Alright, the time has come for exhaust on my 1.8. It is a Birthday present, so im trying to keep the cost down. This is the setup I am thinking of: 2.5'' catback with stock res and the 14815 Mag muffler. Few Q's.
    1. I'm expecting some drone, but will it be unbarable at freeway speeds?
    2. How hard will it be in the future to cut out stock res and put in two 18'' resonators?
    3. Any input with this would be great.

    Thanks,
    Eric

    1. I'm expecting some drone, but will it be unbarable at freeway speeds?
    2. How hard will it be in the future to cut out stock res and put in two 18'' resonators?
    3. Any input with this would be great.

    Thanks,
    Eric
you dont want to use your stock res...the diameter on those are 2.25 and the rest of the piping is all 2.5
but if you must... it wouldnt be hard at all to cut them out later...any exhaust shop can do it

as for resinators...you can get some from vibrant, magnaflow, flowmaster, etc....take for pick

look on ebay and whatnot for deals

talk to rennwerks and mike will give you a deal on them

The only time I had unbearable drone at highway speeds was when I dumped my exhaust after the cat under the passenger seat. I have a HFC and straight 2.5" pipe from the cat back and it's really not bad at all inside. My girlfriend still falls asleep on long drives without any complaints. I can set off car alarms if I try though

What set up on the 2.8 besides stock would keep the "rifling" noise from occurring while accelerating? Similar to what most of the youtube videos sound like. I hate that oscillating exhaust note that v6's tend to make with an aftermarket exhaust...

I'm aware that a lot of v6's just tend to sound like this and it just is what it is...

Here's a link to the sound I'm referring to...

an x pipe or H pipe may help.

Washyourrhands, I was looking at all the after market resonators and they are kinda expensive for 2.5''. I think i'm going to go talk to Rennwerks Thursday about this.
Kyle, thanks for the sound clip! I will check out X or H pipe also.

Thanks for the help and new ideas guys. Greatly appreciated.

the X or H pipe will only work if you're v6 or v8.
