Question Aeb to awm wideband conversion PLease Help, who ever has an awm engine.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm working on converting my car to wideband using the awm ecu and wiring harness. I got a 98 audi a4 quattro 5 speed 2.0L stroked with aeb engine block.
I need help making this work cuz the sensor are diferent from each other. The connectors are not the same but I will make it work instead of buying new one.

    For this conversion I bought:

2 ecu awm (auto and 5 speed)
2 wiring harness (2001 awm audi a4 and 2003 vw awm engine)
    awm maf
    awm map sensor
    dbw throutle body
    2001 instrument cluster
    green coolant temp sensor
    oil pressure sender
    4 4pins coil pack

    Need to get:

    pedal assembly
    gas pedal wiring harness
    alternator(different connection)
    n249(just til I delete it)
    n115(just til I delete it)
some interior harness(cluster, radio, fuse, hvac)
    fuse box
4-windows hall sender wheel or plate for cam sensor

Now there are two connectors that I don't know yet. I got this information out from a passat awm engine. correct me if I am wrong.
One of the connector look just like the connector from the map sensor
and the other one is a 3-pins with 2 cable

    does it have speed sensor?

map sensor already has it's own connection coming directly from the ecu box. You can see on the last pic. on the white paper. I need to know about number 5, 1 and 2. also for the one close to the intake. it's big and 2-pins brown and black cable.

I think connector #3 is for the Camshaft Chain Adjuster (Cam Chain Tensioner) for the Variable Valve Timing. Remember, on the AWM it is electronically actuated. It is a 2 pin square connector with a metal retainer clip. You can see the connector in this photo right side:

Pics are not the best but I believe #1 is to the crank position sensor.
The crank position sensor on the 058 block and 06A are different. Different physically and the pin outs are different.
For a while I just used the 06A sensor and made it fit but I was getting a fault code and rpm fluctuations you can feel up on the top end.
So I had to do something to rectify the situation.

Get your self a nice electrical/pin tool set. I believe ECS sells a set for $70. If you want to cheap out then it may cost you expensive pins and connectors but it could be done.

Here is the complete thread on this topic from start to finish. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4741923

    In summary:

Retrofit the 058 crank position connector on the 06A engine harness. Get rid of the 06A connector.
cheap way -> (You could just carefully cut and solder your 058 connector in the 06A place with the correct wires soldered in place.)

    Other sensors to replace/add:
2 knock sensors for the AWM/06A need to be purchased and installed in the same locations of the 058.
1 wideband 02 sensor AWM for the post turbo position.
    1 map sensor for AWM

    others??? Not sure.

You have a lot to do since you are coming from the AEB and DBC. The above is one less obstacle that I hope works out for you. Good Luck! Let me know if you have any questions.

I am going to be following this thread closely I have always been interested in this swap. There is a thread on vortex I don't know how helpful it is or maybe but you can take a look at it and make a decision. Narrow band sucks. I am limited by a 440 file with unitronics and with Tapp alot of people are having issues with MAF's and intake setup for it. Enough of me babbling here is the thread.

#5 most be the vvt cuz is right night to the coolant temp. is it possible to run without it?
#1 is not the crank pos. sensor cuz I already know which one it is. I separated the knock sensors, o2 sensors and crank sensor.
    - any of you that have awm engine can lift up their coolant reservoir and look at what the connector that is on the same cable line with the reservoir one(connector #1).

I need to mod the knock sensors connection, the crank, the evap, alternator and the oil pressure sender. I will mod the engine part for now. the interior wiring I just need to change some connection to make it work for now, but I will be buying the wiring whenever I find it.

hey I guess I can't do it yet untill I can get the dash panel wiring harness. everything look good from the ecu to engine connection. but the interior will also need new wiring harness. the old one aeb has 4 connectors. the awm has 5. I'm just going to wait until I find the harness.

I ordered the interior harness for $200 and it should be here in a week or 2. the guy that sold it for me said that the fuel pump connection is also different so he include that cable too.

Wow man that's a lot of work. I have to check what I got because the guy gave me a s#!t load of wires. I got the whole wiring harness, dash harness, with the fuse box, relays, the whole pedal assembly and he left the sensors on so it'll be easier to figure out. I'm just missing AWM alternator, cluster and the 02 sensors. I'll have to check that fuel pump connection. Thanks for the update!

I am going to try to mod the connection to the alternator since is a one cable connection too. might have to cut it to make be like the aeb one(nut holding the cable) instead of the awm that has clip connector.

Cool, it seems like it's hard or is it tedious? Did you get a chance to take any pics? Did you only change the gas pedal? Are you driving the car?

Did you get a chance to finish the conversion? I'm kinda stuck and wondering if you can help me. I'm trying to connect all the connections by the foot rest on the driver's side and also the connections by the same area, but on the passenger side too. How did you connect those connections? Hope you can help thx!

I did finish it, but I had to change all of the wiring harness, the engine, the dash and the one that goes under the carpet to the gas pump. I didn't connect the sun roof so there is no power there nor the light.

I was affraid you were gonna say that. I'll see if I can compare the 2 wiring harness, if I can figure it out I'll have do the same thing. I already have everything out, except the carpet. Why didn't you connect the sunroof?

By the way back in october I got my block back from the machine shop. I don't know if you remember, I bought the pistons from you.

oh that's right. the connector didn't match so I end up not connecting it. I am going to sell my car to my friend but he wants the original car system, so I'll be taking all of this out. remember to measure all the bore and piston.

Oh.. Let me know if you want to sell me the wiring that goes under the carpet and I also need the pedal assembly. I bought one on CL, but came to find out that I bought the wrong pedals.

The machine shop assembled the block and my cylinder head. Here's some pics.

Hey I have a quick question. I'm connecting everything now, but I ran across an issue. My abs connection is different then the awm, so I had to take that part of the wiring out and put back the aeb abs wiring, now the plugs don't match. Did you run across this problem? Can you help me out? Thx

I wonder why I'm going though this. This sucks. In regards of my build, I'm kinda far from starting it. I'm finishing up doing all the connections, then I have to change all the calipers to the S4 calipers, I still have to change the pedal assembly and a couple of little things. My biggest concern is the wiring. I need to make sure I connect everything right. Thanks for your help though
