Mobile 1 oil filters any good? $28 oil change at Autozone

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I changed my valve cover gasket today, spark plugs and did an oil change.

I went to Autozone to get my Mobil 1 0w-40 which is usually $7-8/quart. Today I saw a sale for 5 quarts of of any Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil and a Mobil 1 oil filter for $27.99.

I need oil for 2 cars, both 1.8t so was going to buy 9 quarts expecting to pay around $65 for just oil. This deal, it was cheaper to get 10 quarts and 2 filters then just buy the 9 quarts alone.

I have Mann filters normally and have a few stocked up in my garage but how are the Mobil 1 filters? Should I use it with one of my oil changes or just toss it and be happy I got 10 quarts of oil cheaper then 9 quarts would normally cost.

I have used them in the past with no ill effects. If I recall correctly the mobile 1 and K&N filters are the same filters but the K&N has the nut on the end for removal with a wrench. If you put your filter on properly you should not need anything more than your hand to get it off (no pun intended)

Yea I've been doing oil changes enough I don't have a problem with the filter anymore.

I've just never used anything but mann filters.

there was thread a while back on Audiworld where someone cut up a mann filter vs the mobil 1 filter and the mann had more filtering surface and had a better flow orafice design to handle the pressure of the 1.8T oil system.

Mobil 1 is a great filter. I used them religiously on my srt making over 400fwhp with q horsepower oil. with the 1.8t being a bit more finicky than my srt, i have stuck with royal purple filters. fyi, pepboys always offers a valvoline pure syn and a purolator pureone filter for 28 bux. but there is no pureone filter for the 1.8t so they will upgrade to a royal purple for free. not bad, 5 $6 qts of oil and a $15 filter for less than $30.

Do it, they're a great place.

Low prices and fair shipping. I usually buy a few at a time, can spend under $35 with shipping and have 4 filters and plugs for the next 4 oil changes. That's what I do then I just buy oil when I see it on sale.

If I had the money I would go buy all of Autozone's 0w-40 at $28 for 5 quarts. I have 2 cars and they're both 1.8ts so I go through the stuff regularly.

From what the Autozone guy has told me......
Mobile one filters down to the smallest particle while K+N flows the best and has the highest burst rate.

not sure why, but i have a hard time beleiving anything the people at autozone tell me.

-Autozone also tried to tell me the the GC 0w-30 was actually made in america and put into bottles that bottles that say made in germany on the back.

-When i bought the GC 0w-30 at Autozone he questioned me why i wasn't running the more superior Mobil 1 product, i asked him if he understood the difference in the basestocks used to produce either products. He had the blank stare so i asked him to just ring me out and take my money for the GC 0w-30 product.

Verdict = MANN is the better choice.

The M1-301 was actually designed to fit a Ford SB V8... it just happens to have the same thread size and gasket placement as the VW filters... M1 knows this and markets the same filter across the board to sell more filters w/o having to produce more models... its all about their profit, not what is best for YOUR car.
the bypass setting on the M1 is set to 10psi. Stock VW/MANN bypass pressure setting is around 30psi. The M1 although it will fit, is not your optimal choice. If you are looking for something over the counter that you can buy at a local autoparts, then the WIX #51191 would be a better choice.

dont trust anything the AutoZone guy tells you. they are not there cause they are experts, they are there cause AZ needs a body to take your money, mop the floors, & keep people from robbing the store blind. (not that it does not happen anyways) the guys in the red shirts make minimum wage, or a hair above... the guys in the gray shirts average about $2 more. what they preach is their personal opinion, so take the information for that, just that, and nothing more... most dont know what the hell they are talkaing about, and could not find their way out of a paper bag.

I buy the oil change special just to get the break on oil and then I return the filter and use an oem filter.

I used to have that thread saved where they cut open all the filters to see what had the most surface area, and MANN filters WERE superior.

Personally I used the mann filters with total 5w40 and a new drain plug every 4k miles, with new plugs every other change. It keeps my Audi happy which keeps me happy

All you guys worry a shit load about your filter, we all know that the head gasket is going to clean your oil by getting rid of it and making you put fresh oil constantly in to the car. Also your turbos will go out and burn the oil for you.

I use that 28 bucks deal, I've benn using that in my car for the past year, no condensation, the oil doesn't have garbage when I drain it. Keep your regular oil change at your discretion and check your dipsticks constantly so you don't have to worry about your screen getting clogged.

So I changed my oil tonight and I've been using Mobil 1 Filters for the past few changes, but this time I bought a Mann from Europaparts.com and it was significantly smaller. Did I buy the wrong filter or are the Mobil 1 filters just massive?

you baught the wrong filter. audi switch to the mac truck sized filters after having to warrenty engines because they are stupid and said 10,000 mile oil changes, regualr oil, and small filter. they went to 5,000 miles, synthetic oil, and mac truck filter. some companies didnt catch wind of this. mann and napa are a couple of them.

this is the one you should be running (it is the same size as the Mobil 1 filter): Here
easiest way to find it is to look up a 2004 1.8t Passat oil filter.

Ahh, thanks for the response. I see what I did. I should've bought http://www.europaparts.com/oil-filte...561b-mann.html but instead bought http://www.europaparts.com/oil-filte...561b-mann.html . Oh well, I'm sure it won't hurt for 1 oil change. I'll just do it at 2500 miles instead of 3K.

If you are using synthetic oil there is no reason to change at 3K miles (even with the smaller filter). You can safely go 5K miles with either filter.

Is there any downside to running the same oil for a set amount of time? My last oil change was in November and with this new job I drive the car pretty hard and it's in stop and go traffic 99% of the time, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to change it.

Personally I am very comfortable with a 5K OCI using synthetic oil. It certainly won't hurt anything to change it sooner, but it's an unnecessary expense. I believe EGB 1.8T is currently experimenting with extended OCI intervals with a Blackstone Oil Evaluation at each change. The last report I remember reading was at 7,500 miles with the recommendation to go a little further on the next interval.

i do the same to people who buy parts at autozone and think they are good. only reason to go there for parts is if you dont give a fuck about your car and want to spend the least amount of money while you fuck shit up and try to do it yourself.

The last report I remember reading was at 7,500 miles with the recommendation to go a little further on the next interval.
I recently did a Blackstone evaluation after using Castrol Edge 5w30 for 7500 mi and the report came back great and suggesting I could go longer. EBG18T is also doing some UOAs.

    5 Q x $6 = $30
    1 filter = $15
    total = $45

It's worth buying the 5 pack from MJM( ended up getting 6 for the price of 5) and get them for under 5-6 bucks ea. plus $30 in oil is ~$35 bucks FTW.
but $28 bucks is a good deal in case of a pinch but the oem filter as said before has better flow rate and is what goes on our car.

I've tried twice to use after market oil filters. Each time resulted in an oil pressure light coming on. So now I will never use anything but oem. As soon as I put an oem filter on it's all good.

Yep, since you have the results for the 5000 mile test on the GC 0w-30. I am going to try 7000-7500 miles on the GC 0w-30 and see how the results compare with gregs. I also want to see how this compares to my results with Lubro 5w-40 & the Elf/Total 5w-40.

Meh whatevers on sale, doesn't matter to me. Currently running Fram, last time it was STP. I change my oil every 3-4k with synthetic, so I'm not worried.

i too used to work at AutoZone... trust me, i know the crap you guys see... and its worse when the wackjob has his own code scanner and thinks that makes him a mechanic... i have many a story.

on the same note, i also have seen the uninformed BS that the wannabe mechanic people that work there spew out. ...it goes both ways.

and thats the reason they are in business... they cater to the general public that cant afford/or are too cheap to have the work done... not cause they "like" doing it. ...the actual "car enthusiast" that you would expect to shop there is actually the minority, and by a huge margin.
