NICE! ...... now here's the other question ..... do you think it has clear coat paint over it, or some kind of hard plastic dip stuff?

It should be clear coat, but who knows what kind they use. Are you looking to refinish Frank?

I would buy a used piece from ebay and do your testing on that. I'm pretty sure if you scuff the finish and respray with a flat based clear coat it would look good.

Few things of note since I routinely sand through all the various types of trim that Audi offers:

    1) Not sure what the surface is coated with, but I'm almost positive its not a clearcoat. You can sand it down though, its pretty thick. I use a finishing sander and even with 80 grit and some muscle it takes me a while to get it down.
    2) You have to be REALLY careful after you've sanded a lot of the top coat down, especially if you've never done it before. Once you burn through the top coat, the actual layer of decorative wood is pretty thin. You'd have to use a very high grit sandpaper and take a lot of care not to sand for too long in one spot other wise you run the risk of cutting through to the ugly wood below.

I just Dremelled through a bit of a B5 door piece to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about. All the areas that are still slighty hazy and grey are where there is still top coat on the wood. As soon as you go through that top coat though, you hit the ugly wood.

If I were you, I would just scuff up the top coat a little bit, wetsanding at like 400-600 grit, and then add whatever finish you were you going to add. Maybe a brushable Minwax Satin finish?

I agree with Matt, you'll have to dull the gloss finish and use like a matte clear.

Yes. Just because some here might be swapping out interior trim...

Every Audi set of trim I've ever received (across all model lines) that looked like wood, was real wood.

Absolutely! I was shocked when I saw the "updated" post with pictures to my instructions. I use plastic pry tools from Zdmak, available from ECS Tuning. Those are the BEST tools for this job! Also, Lowe's Home Improvement has a micro-adjust 13mm wrench that is great for the bolt under the armrest.

I am curious to see the finished product of this wood refinishing project. Just keep in mind that the wood, although real, is only a VERY thin veneer over aluminum, so there is not a lot of wood to work with once you strip off the clear epoxy. Good luck!!!
