How much does repair shop charge for oil change? What am I looking at? Also, how hard is it to change it urself?

its pretty easy. all you need is a jack/stands and some hand tools and your ready to go.

its the most difficult repair to do to your car. it takes a steady hand and the focus and concentration of a disiplined ninja. you can attempt it but you have been warned. first jack your car up then, find the drain plug, and here's the really hard part. get a wrench and un screw the drain plug and let the oil drain. put the plug back in. make sure its snug not tight. 2.0t 5qts of synthetic 5w40 3.2 6qts of synthetic. you should probably change the oil filter too but i dont feel like explaining that. thats easy enough.

Uh you should always change the filter when you do an oil change. Im not to sure about the 2.0's but the oil filter is under the intake manifold. If you have gorilla grips for hands you might be able to get it off with your hands, but you might need to go out and buy a oil filter removal tool. You can use a very large pair of channel locks as well. Remove the filter put a new one on, fill the filter with oil and rub a little oil on the O-Ring this way it makes a nice seal. Then put the recommended amount of oil in your engine. Start the motor after you put oil back in, check the oil level on the dipstick.

You should be looking between 65-85 bucks, any cheaper and I wouldn't trust them. You MUST use synthetic oil, so you are looking at 30+ bucks for just oil. I prefer to pay my shop to do my oil changes. Sure, its easy to do yourself, but when I pay to have it done, they VAG the car for codes, and give it a full inspection, something I couldn't do. So there is always peace of mind that the entire car is in pristine working condition. Totally worth it IMO

Not sure if the coupons were targeted to my area but I just got a bunch and one of them is a $59.99 full syn oil change. As Jim said oil alone is $30 and it's cold so to the dealership I go....plus I like the loaner and car wash perks.

if only the local gas station peeps were patient enough not to crack the oil filter canister, not over-tighten it, etc... no indy shop I know follows the torque specs like they don't exist! ridiculous... so I do this maintenance myself for these things along even if it isn't economically worth it. one of the shops cracked one of the side belly pans while lifting the car... a new one of those is over $200!

Yup, its hit or miss with gas stations. Some know what they're doing, others don't. In the end, if you have the time and the space, its best to DIY.

I do mine for $30 with the oil and the filter coming from the dealer...helps to know the parts manager.

I get my oil and filter at Autozone. Take it to Sears, they charge $16 to change it with my oil and filter. Make sure you use synthetic oil that meets the VW spec.

Ok, related, but unrelated question- I planned on doing mine every 5000, but when I get the car back from the dealer (in addition to changing the plugs, air cleaners, etc), he said the next service is in 10,000 miles. Am I underdoing it, or is he overdoing it? Bear in mind, this is from the Audi dealership.

synthetic oils are supposed to go past 5k and reccomended to change at 10k but i'd be hard pressed to find a auto-inclined person that would trust having their oil in their car longer then 5k synthetic oils have come in leaps and bounds apparently but i still would rather over change my oil then underchange it
