tip owners.. do you guys let off the gas when switching gears?

It's a habit for me, the shifts seem much more smoother this way, I'm wondering if others do this as well...

Also, are the shifts a tad "jerky" in auto mode? they don't seem as seemless and as smooth as me switching the gears.

do the transmission reprogrmaming at your dealer, it was a recall, so its free....

I let off gas for tip because I can have the blow-off sound from the car.

I tend to let off the gas a little.

As for jerky its because the TCM's shift points are designed for engine optimal shift point (trying to keep the car at around 3k rpm). Being in tip mode you get to shift where you want so sometimes it where the shift is smoother, not optimal.

I am assuming you are talking about Automatic. I tend to back off the gas a little bit when I feel the car is about to shift. By backing off gas, I encourage the car to shift sooner which save some gas.

You're thinking too "manually". The TCM takes time to read the signal you've created by "switching" gears. I find it much more smooth to shift and then modulate the throttle to sort of revmatch it up.

In D, the shifts are really bad on my car but I never use it so my tranny isn't trained to drive the way I want it to in D.

I never let go of the gas i nail it all the way down....

But you know what intresting is that when i dont give full throttle that i just hold the pedal down but without pushing to the max almost to the end my boost stays at a constint 20 pounds and pulls hard but if i nail the pedal all the way down my turbo peaks and looses boost pretty fast...its like my car feels better without full throttle like if my car is choking up.... i have thought of putting a stopper at the back of my accelerator pedal to hold it from going all the way down....

as anyone else experienced this or am i going crazy.

I get the same thing. Turbo starts to die off with the boost if I floor the car.

No need to let up on the throttle (which technically is an air pedal, not a gas pedal) :-). Depending on the OEM, some drop a fuel pulse from the ECU during a trans gear change, others reduce torque other ways to make the shift smoother. In most cases, the time to shift is more a function of moving the fluid than the ECU/TCU talking to communicate a change. Again, depends on the strategy.

I only let off the gas to hear the dv... but for faster runs, i just floor it and shift.

    Hey guys...
well, i have a CVT, so whenever i shift i dont feel anything, as if i wasn't shifting in the first place. regarding taking the foot of the pedal, i dont think that is necessary...

the only time i actually take it off is as if i shift to 2nd gear, take my car to 5k rpm...take foot off....let rpm drop a little, then apply a little pressure on the accelerator and my car gets big time boost and i shift right away...

no need to take foot off...well in a cvt that is...performance is better by actually having the accelearator applied somewhat.

    It was fun...peace out.

Yeah, i'm also curious about this recall? Does it effect the 05's? I haven't really gotten to play with mine (1.8Tq tip) too much, still breaking her in, but want to make sure I don't need to get it reprogrammed.

    Thanks

The whole recall is to reflash the TCU with updated software. It eliminates problems people had with a jerky motion when going into reverse right after a cold start. It raises the idle setting and also raises the shift points for "D" and "S". After reflashing, "D" mode will seem like you're driving in "S" (shifts at a high RPM level). This should be done to all Tiptronic transmissions. I don't think it affects CVT or Multitronic trannys.

For the original question: Mash it and thrash it. I know that there's a one second delay from shifting the stick to having the tranny change gears, so I anticipate when the gears would actually shif and physically do the shift sooner.

Is this something I should call my dealer about or is it safe to assume it was done before i picked it up. S mode redlines every gear, D seems ok so far.

Might be a good chance that this was already done on the '05 models. Since it's not an urgent/immediate need to be done, you can casually bring it up at your next scheduled maintenance.
