Question Stock Alarm Replacement using VW Alarm?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

I have a question that I hope to get your experiences on.

Short Version: Are VW electronic parts typically the same as Audi part? Specifically, is the VW alarm the same as the Audi one?

Long Version: I am trying to replace my stock alarm horn (eaten away by dead battery). I pulled the old one from the trunk using this guide:

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=306320

The part number is 8L0 951 605. A search on genuineaudiparts.com showed that the part has been updated to 8L0 951 605A, which looks like this:

The part costs $176.40... which is a lot. I then did further research and found that there is a VW part of 1J0 951 605A, which looks like this:

That part only costs $85.68. Do you think that they're actually the same part? $86 bucks is a lot but it is way cheaper than the Audi part. I have not been able to find any research to install a generic (2-pin) alarm in place of the Audi (3-pin) alarm unit. If they're the same part, i'm going to get the VW part and hope that it will work since there's no return on electrical parts.

    Thanks for your opinions!

BTW, I'm new here so Hi! I just bought an 03 Audi A4 1.8TQ and I'm constantly worried that I've forgotten to lock my doors.

Should work just fine. Has the same software programmed as the Audi unit.

Probably the one you're looking is for a Rabbit or a Jetta, and the one for our A4s probably crosses into the Passats or something. Is there anyway to replace it for something louder?

Interested in whether this will work. Dealer quoted me like $225 for the Audi module, but if that VW one works, I'm on it. Looks like there's no reason it wouldn't work...

Thanks for the link for the pin diagram. Why didn't I think of that? My old alarm is taken apart so I double checked. The three pins are:

    1. GND
    2. Comm
    3. +12V

If I were to go generic, how should I tap the signal? The generic alarms only have 2 wires (pos/neg). I think I'll need a way to get the Comm signal to the alarm?

I did some further research and it looks like there are some differences in the VW unit.
On the VW forums, the pins inputs seem to be:

    1. Comm/Signal
    2. GND
    3. +12V

If all else is the same, I might need to just buy an extra connector or cross-splice the 1st and 2nd cable. But now there is a bit more doubt as to whether the unit is the same inside.

Re: Stock Alarm Replacement using VW Alarm?

Theoretically, the only reason these have a 12V and ground connection is for charging the batteries inside them. I wonder if the alarm control module is "aware" of what type of siren is connected to it. I'm thinking not, since mine is dead and the car doesn't seem to be bothered by it. I also can't see any GOOD reason why these two parts would be wired differently, that defeats the purpose of the whole economy-of-scale/parts commonality that carmakers love so much these days... That said, I looked for a Passat part but couldn't find one with a part number or picture. The 1J0 part is used in Phaetons and Touaregs, apparently.

Re: Stock Alarm Replacement using VW Alarm?

Well besides charging the battery, I think it may also provide power for the alarm itself. I wonder what would happen if i just connected a generic alarm to the signal line and the ground.

Haha... it has been a long time since I've taken a class in circuits. Those were the days.
Too bad I don't know anyone with a Phaetons or Touaregs to test it out.

I don't know. I ended up getting a used Audi unit. Let us know the results if you try it!

It would work, but most of the VW horns had a "honk" instead of a "chirp" up to the mk6/ late 05' model,....so, you'd get that surprise when you installed it!

The VW alarm siren shown above is a "beeping" type alarm siren. It was used in Touareg's and Phaetons. Other VW's use a 2 wire horm for the alarm. Here's a link to youtube:

Looks like just wire 1 and 2 are reversed.
