99% of the localities on Earth that HAVE traffic laws will have traffic laws that outlaw RED lights on the front of an automobile.

    Re: Red LED headlight mod!

Sorry, I took this pic with my iPhone, and the LED's are really damn bright so the camera freaked out. It's not actually a big red bar, there's about ten individual LED's.They are LED strips, and I put them on the very bottom of the headlight. The wires are hidden in the rubber protection. It took some crazy ingenuity to actually wire this to a switch in the car. I have a switch to turn them on and off in the cabin, more specifically the slot that is right behind the shifter in the center part between the seats. The wires run from the engine compartment through a tiny space between the right fender and the right door. Then I just hid the wires behind the glove compartment and ran them under the plastic by the center console (I'll get pics) to that slot. I took out the cover for the slot and drilled a hole in in to put the switch there, and then placed it back. I'll post some pics of the switch, where I ran the wires, and the LED's when they are off and it's bright outside so you guys can take a look at them.

    Pictures!

Alright, here are the better (I hope) pics I took.

First couple are with lit conditions

(This is when it was done and off)

(This is when it was done and on)

(This one and the next one are when it was in the process, so don't mind any dangling wires or tape lol. They were taken care of)

These two are of the switch

Now the next set is the wiring, from engine compartment to cabin

(You can see the wiring going along the weather stripping)

(This is that space I was talking about in the post above. It's at the top left corner of the engine compartment when facing from the front. By the way, my friend's A4 was parked right next to me in that picture, and it's the same color, so it might look a little confusing lol )

(This is the opposite side of the pic above. It's with the right passenger door open, and the wires coming through that gap.)

(I outlined where the wires are in red. The wires are underneath that part. You can kinda pull it back, and there is enough space to conceal the wires behind it. They run along the back of the glove box before getting to this part. Then it continues up through the median between the seats into that slot where the switch is.)

You know, it's pretty demeaning when you just dismiss this cause it's "illegal." I put quite a few hours and a lot of hard work to do this. It's not like I drive around with them on. I'm aware this is not street legal, and I did this cause I think it looks cool, and it's purely for looks.

    Re: Red LED headlight mod!

I have to agree that the install is messy. The real way to do it is to run the wires through your firewall. It's a PITA but it means that passengers don't see wires and gaffer's tape when they get in your car.

And then of course, they're a cop *magnet*. Which is fine i guess if you're okay with that. I would have gone with RGB LEDs so I could make them white if I wanted to use them normally.

But then, I wouldn't have done it - I think just throwing LEDs at something is cheesy. But that's just me.

Glad you're happy with it. I would suggest trying to run the wires through the firewall though - that would be much cleaner.

Nice switch install. The rest of the install is horrible. Please tell me that isn't scotch tape on the bottom of the switch? A for effort though. I would help you reinstall if you were local.

As for the LED's...Not a fan of them on cars that aren't supposed to have them in(on in your case) the headlights. Just my opinion though. You should take your tail lights apart and make some custom LED tails.

It is not scotch tape lol. It's clear electrical tape to make sure that the wires don't touch. It's been a while since I had this, and one of the strips broke when I was clear cornering my headlights. d'oh! Anyway, I am gonna reinstall white ones, and most likely gonna run the wires through the firewall this time.

I think most people are not bashing the LED's but more the fact that from the install it just looks slapped on and isn't very well integrated into the headlight or overall design of the car.

true, well scotch tape on the exterior of the headlight is ridiculous, but i think LEDs installed correctly are bangin

If you read it, you would know that the scotch tape on the headlight was during the install.

I agree red was not the best choice for headlights, and the placement and wiring could have been done better. But definitely an A for creativity, well thought out but execution wasn't the greatest.

yeah the switch location is nice!
But if your gonna keep that rice mod you should def run the wires a different way. Find the DIY for the boost gauge installation and route your wires that way.

if you take out the fender lining on the right side you will see where the wiring harness for the headlight and airbag sensors go. Its a very easy way to get into the cabin they connect right here:
