    drive shaft oil leak

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi every one, new to the forum and really need help. Saw a small puddle forming under the car a few days ago and went under for a closer look. Please see the photo I did some searches, but I am quite honestly not sure what to query (I don't know what the specific area that I need help with is called). There seems to be some talk about center support bearings, but I don't think this is it (or is it). If any one has a DIY for this already, please point me in the right direction. I have a good amount of tools and am not afraid to dig in. The problem is that I cannot find a hanes or chilton for this model.

Is this doable on jack stands and are there any "while you're there" items I should be aware of.

    Thank you for any help.

BTW, while I was searching for what this problem was, I saw an offer on blauparts.com at the bottom of the page that they will rebuild certain model driveshafts for free. No affiliation, just passing on what I saw.

I don't think that's coming from the driveshaft, it's more like the oil seal on the end of the trans. Not a hard job at all.

Looks like the oil seal on the output shaft of the center diff. Not a hard fix at all, the seal is not too expensive either.

Take a look at this thread for a bit more info: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...nsmission+Seal

    Re: drive shaft oil leak

Wow, thanks all. Pictures help a bunch. Can you guys point me in the right direction for the best place/price to download the repair manual for this car. I have seen $91, but have heard I can get fit or $60 or less-would prefer to download (I need the torque specs).

Also, anyone come across a drawing/pic naming what all the large parts under the car are. This is why I suffer at the search process-I don't know what to call these items.

    Thank you again.

doing a search for the manual, here is what I have so far for those searching for the same:
    Partsgeek-$91.75 for the cd
Bentley publishers-$129.95 for the dvd (not sure what the difference is)

Bentley manuals CD's usually go for right around 100 bucks outside of Robert Bentley. They may be or have phased out the CD version directly from them. There is also an online parts database similar to ETKA that can be used to look up part numbers. www.vagcat.com. Just register and it's free.

PM me your email address and the year/engine/trans of your car and I'll email you the instructions from Bentley. They are not difficult to replace but you need a few special tools.

If you change the fluid it takes just under three liters.

That's not how it's done on a 5speed. There is a circlip that holds the flange, not a bolt. YOu have remove the clip via a plug from the bottom.

Yes, obviously that's an A8 with an auto trans, I was more or less trying to show it as an overview and what to expect fluid wise when the seal comes out. They're all the same, have been for 25 years, but yes, the model in question does use a snap ring on the flange.

EDIT: Looks like he does have a 5spd auto, so he would have the bolt if I'm not mistaken. Either way, that's the generalized job that I linked.

    Re: drive shaft oil leak

Yeah I double checked and for the A4 auto trans it is the same procedure as the A8 that you linked.

    For the archives:

    Auto trans:

    http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articl...placement.html

Torque is 25Nm for the center torx that holds the flange.
23Nm for the head shield bolts
55Nm for the driveshaft to the flange with blue loctite. It recommends replacement of the bolts however I never did this and have had no issues over the years.

Fill the trans slowly to allow the fluid to move... so fill, wait a few min, fill again, wait a few, etc.

For a five speed (or six I imagine) use this:

    http://www.audigeeks.com/forums/index.php?topic=3079.0

The only torque spec is the 55Nm for the driveshaft bolts.

I got my DVD from Bimmerzone.com recently for $80. Not super impressed with the way they have the info organized or how little info there seems to be, but since there is not a Chiltons or Haynes manual for these cars, it will have to do.

All the info is there it's just tricky to sort through it. Once you get used to sifting through you can find almost everything. It is made for professional mechanics not diy'ers

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread! I've spent some time, but I'll keep looking to get more familiar with it. I have found most of the instructions but haven't found the description of the codes from the computer yet.

The center diff/transfer case only takes 0.8L.
