Symptoms of a failing dual mass flywheel?

I recently replaced the clutch and installed a new LuK DMFW on my car. Before I had replaced it I had an intermittent problem that I have not heard since, I am wondering now if it was due to a failing flywheel.

Basically the car would occasionally make loud clanking/thumping noises from the trans area while under load, and only under load. It didnt matter if it was a light load or heavy WOT, it would clank and I could feel it through the pedals. The odd part is the intermittent nature... I'd hear it during a drive, then the next time I drove... nothing. On and off for about three months, probably five times total. I also heard it right before I took the car apart and once back together, no noise.

It all started one day when fanning the clutch to reverse out of a parking spot, it was rattling a bit. That rattling just went away for like two months, then the clanking etc started.

Anyway I am just curious if these are typical symptoms of a failing DMFW. It is a moot point now that I have a new one, but I'd still like to know.

    Thanks for any input!

New v Old. I'm very glad that I replaced it, the clutch is sooooo smooth and never chatters or skips anymore. Clutchmasters CX300 FTW!

I am having similiar issue/noises and I came to the same conclusion. My clutch holds fine but there is a "lightweight flywheel rattle" coming from the trans.

It's funny because when I asked several people if a flywheel can fail they laughed at me.

I just broke mine, issues are like you said, the pedal would almost kick back at my foot in between shifts and things

I worked on a Jetta that had a broken flywheel, although it was a DSG tranny... it sounded like a diesel and had no power whatsoever. I guess it had broken a while back, because it vibrated so much that it started to slip where the input shaft of the tranny splines into the flywheel, and eventually wore down the splines to look like a smooth, machined surface.

wow that's bad... Makes no sense though, were the bolts backed out on it?

No all bolts were tight, but the two pieces of the flywheel had wayyy too much play between them. It's supposed to be pretty stiff and only move radially... this flywheel was loose enough to move around by hand, and not just radially but up/down and left/right, like an eccentric bolt.
