Replacing front diff fluid, what's the capacity?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This weekend is catch-up on some maintenance I'm a few thousand miles overdue for. I'm going to be changing all the differential fluids. Can't seem to find the capacity of the front differential, however.

And from what I read, it uses the same stuff as the center differential...which is...?

JHM says around 3.5L, so buy 4 and then fill till starts to dribble out. The filler cap is kinda up near the driver axle are too, its a 10mm hex bolt if I remember correctly.

Re: Replacing front diff fluid, what's the capacity?

Front front needs 3.5qt? Dang. Center supposedly needs a little under 1qt, rear needs 2qt.

    So it's GL-4 or GL-5 in all 3?

Re: Replacing front diff fluid, what's the capacity?

you must put GL-4 in the transmission/ center diff. GL-5 will wear out the brass parts in your transmission faster. what fluid are you going with?

Not planning on GL-5 in the tranny. Just going to grab Royal Purple MTF at the local Autozone.

The diffs can use GL-4 or GL-5 from what I read. I can get Motul locally but am not crazy about it at $20/L. Can also get Red Line locally. I'll see what AutoZone has.

Maybe I am getting mixed up here from reading too many threads, but front diff = tranny, right?

The center diff and tranny share the same fluid. Make sure you use ONLY GL-4 for it. Nothing that's both GL-4 & GL-5 approved. I went with Redline MT90 + a quart of Shockproof Heavy. I highly recommend it.

You should use GL-5 for the rear differential.

Okay, this is making more sense now. Cut me some slack, long day at work and my mind is shot.

    Manual tranny: 3.5qt (GL4, NOT GL5)
    Rear diff: 2qt (GL4, GL5 gear oils)

:( you only have your center and rear diff. center takes 3.5 rear takes 1.5.

I'm going to a local tuner (Genesis Racing Development) that stocks European Mobil 1 and Amsoil, so I think I'll be set. Thanks for the info, guys.

I used Motul 75W90 for the rear. Does anyone have DIY for the front diff? The rear was pretty easy to do.

    Thx,

I'll have to check with them on Monday, that may not be the right stuff, it's listed as GL5, not GL4+

if you can read German http://www.motoroel-direkt.de/liquim...e75w90gl4.html the right stuff

    looks like someone already asked:
Thank you very much for your email, dtd. 12th March 2008...

Years ago, Volkswagen recommended for its transmissions a GL5 gear oil with a viscosity range from SAE 75W-90. But some gear boxes had problems with the synchronisation and consequently (Volkswagen recommended) a GL4+ also with SAE 75W-90 viscosity range. Nowadays (1996+ transmissions (which have black covers)) there is no problem with our GL5 SAE 75W-90 gear oil, and it is better for protection against the wear of the gear wheels. Our recommendation is, if there is no problem with the synchronisation (or in other words if it's a modern transmission) it´s better to use the GL5 oil to protect against the wear.

    With kindest regards from Germany!

NO. It will eat your brass synchros. GL-4 in the transmission/ center differential only. If you do not trust me, ask Old Guy or Diagnosticator or 'Jeff' (eh), it's a shame you S4/RS4 guys do not have them, they are invaluable assets to our B6 A4 community.

Yeah, because I asked about a year ago in the transmission & drivetrain forum and they said GL5 was fine for the transmission. I will look around some more for the GL4+, but if I can't find it, i'll run RL MT-90 with some lubromoly MoS2 for gears

Re: Replacing front diff fluid, what's the capacity?

I'll trust Lubro Moly (they are Audi oem approved) and I'll contact Audi and Lubro on Monday...from what I've seen GL5 is fine, but I'll verify that...for myself...Lubro would not put it in writing if they weren't sure...sounds like they were fully aware of the issues...
the GL5 will afford better wear protection...

everyone else, do what you feel is right...imo the GL4 was for older VW trannies whose synchros were built with older tech materials...corrosion/binding was the issue

who builds Audi trannies? Getrag? ZF? or they actually build their own?

does anyone know what tool is required for the tranny and rear diff?
can't be as simple as a box wrench (BMW tranny) or hex (BMW diff)
looks like a reverse 12 point or somthing, not a Torx...
    thanks

NAPA: just bought two 5 liter jugs Lubro-Moly 5W40 (VW 502/505) synthetic and a Mahle filter for $90 including the tax...not bad...

The manual tranny in our cars is Getrag. The auto is ZF.
