Center console pop-up cup holder

I know that the older allroads (and possibly other C5 A6s) have the center console pop-up cup-holder while the newer ones have that useless little 2"x4" tray that serves no purpose than to collect dirt/junk.

If I get one of THESE can I replace the tray? Is the tray even removable?

Any comments welcome.

Same here.....but before I do and get it i would need to know if that tray is even removable....no need to waste $ on something that is going to sit next to other crap in the garage

The PN of that drink holder you guys are talking about is 4B0862533. You can see it as item #13 here. I would search around a bit and see what those puppies are going for before buying that ebay one. For instance, ECS has them listed for $57.41 and they tend to be overpriced by about 5-20%. Clicky. That's why I'm assuming you can find a better deal with a little searching. Good luck.

Also, while very handy, they are fairly fragile. The one in my AR has taken a dump and won't pop up without me pushing down on the opposite of the hinge and manually pulling it up. Other AR's that my wife and I test drove had the same problem.

i need to replace mine too. the spring that spreads the sides is MIA. they just kind of flop around uselessly...

yup that is the one....I can get my hands on for fairly cheap, BUT before I do, I want/need to know if I can retrofit it or if the tray is std in the older models that is not removable.

Mine won't stay down my wifes coat always gets caught on it most cars i've seen have it broken also

They are removable. Incredibly easily, I might add. Takes two seconds to remove and install the new one. When you have it halfway up/down, to where the cover of the holder is at a 45 degree angle, you will see that there are two tabs on the side on the front right and left corner (front towards the front end of the car), all you have to do is press those tabs (be carefull as they can break easily) and the thing just slides right out. Then to install the new one, you just slide it down into the opening and when you hear it click, presto, a new cup holder. I was in the same boat as Gumby on this one. My spring went missing and got a new one from the dealership for about, 55 bucks. I can post a pic of the locking tabs, if anyone needs it. Hope I didnt confuse anyone

I have that cup holder, was in the car when I got it, and its garbage. Like nothing fits in it. Anything that does falls out. And anything that stays in is in the way of shifting.. On mine, the lock or whatever keeps it down is broken so I had to wedge it closed. The dash one is plenty good & way better than the lower one.

I was kicking around the idea of what I could put there to replace the cup holder..

Yea, I didn't really find any use for it so I basically put a retractable cord winder in it and snaked my ipod cable through there.

I have managed to take out the inside of the tray, it looks like a small piece of plastic that sits in the cavity, but there isn't a lot of room in there (more like a small 1.5"x2" gap) and if you look at this pic it looks like the part that goes in (the part that "dips down") is larger, not to mention that the rest of the body is larger as well.

So I ask, are the consoles different or are my eyes playing a trick on me with the images and the actual product.

For me the cup holder would be sufficient, the only thing it would be destined to hold is a smallish 333ml water bottle or a med/large coffee (CDN sizes, not US ) which should fit just right - not to mention that it would only be for the passenger, the dash holder is mine and the time you need it, its needed to have more than one (the ones in the armrest are useless unless you like dipping your elbow into the drink)

looking at that pic, it looks like #14 should come out somehow, but I am not sure it does, it looks like its "very" attached to the console. Or what is that thing under #13? ...... I am officially confused.

Its been a hot minute since I swapped my new one in, but that looks slightly different from the one I did. Man I wish I had your dark leather. I have the beige, and it is a pita to keep clean. I swapped the lighter burl wood out for what looks like the same you have tamas :) never been happier and never looked back I have to go pick up my brother here in a half hour so while im out there I'll take those pics for you all tonight.

Yeah the dash on is good if you have a thirsty radio. Personally, I think the cupholders on the back seat are the best option next to the lower center console one.

Here is the cup holder and its simple removal/install.

Tools needed: 1 hand, two small flatheads, or similar tools \/

The locking tabs. There is one on both sides. You use the screwdrivers, or other tools so push these back (be careful, they can break easily) \/


The next step requires a bit of manual dexterity, or a second set of hands. After you have pushed in the small locking tabs, all you do is pull upwards, as you pull upwards once you get past the locks pull out your tools, and the cup holder will slide right out. The first time I took mine out it took a little more force than every other subsequent time, but it will come out. There is nothing else holding it in. \/


And your cup holder is out.

All you have to do to install is: take your new cup holder in the "closed" position, and slide it into the opening. Once you hear the locking tabs click in, thats it, your done. One new cup holder, removed and installed.

That information is beyond me my man. Someone else may know that answer, I hope its an easy peice swap for you to get a cup holder. Maybe Daft knows? IIRC if the cupholder wasn't there, wasn't there a diffferent switch for gps nav or something along those lines in that location???

Ok, I think I figured it out.....the little try is held in via 2 tabs accessible from the mirror control slot. Removed the entire tray assembly now, so I guess I will also need part# 13a from that parts page (4B0862553) to complete the install and to hold the cup holder in place.

Using a small micro flathead screw driver - just slip it between the plate and the surround, push down and pry up.

IIRC the mirror control can be removed by just a plastic pry tool. I could be wrong though...

Weird, I tried to push it up from below through the cup holder hole and it would not budge.

it has two small metal clips that only come out if you pry it from the top as they lock in to the bottom of the console cover.....you will see once you get it out.

When you pry, do it from the top and bottom and not the sides.

Got all the parts today, but I have tried and tried and I am not sure how to get the tray in. Attempted to go through/under the secondary tray (the larger one towards the back) but I can't twist/turn the tray to get it in the opening. Do you have to remove the center console to get it in? If so, how does the center console come out?

Your holder should be 13a. It looks like it should just slide or something, doesn't really show something keeping it in its current location; but there is something holding it in, whether it be a clip, or whatever. But you could prob get a better idea from the new one. If you got to, it looks like you could take the vent tunnel off to get to it underneath, but I've never done it, so I'm not sure. Hope that helps.

yeah that is the part.

the vent tunnel is not the issue, i was able to access it from tray #10, but it wont go past that. not enough room to maneuver it

yes that is correct, the old tray cam out in no time. the new tray is double as deep as the old one, hence the problems I am having.
