Question new brakes and rotors...nothing but squeaking, need help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
just got new drilled/slotted rotors and Hawk high performance pads in the front.
i don't really feel any improved braking, but definitely not worse.

problem is, they are squeaking like a mofo, especially front right.
they were lubricated properly, bedded in, and i was told the squeaking would probably dissipate after 20 miles because they are new. well 150 miles later, they still squeak as i come to a regular traffic light. I've tried bedding again, but with no avail. I've also hosed down the calipers to clean out any dust, but it didn't help. Any advice? I'm about ready to pull my hair out.

    thanks in advance.

Check the space between the rotor and the brake dust shield. This happened to me on my front right when my brakes were done. All I did was pry it back a bit.

Re: new brakes and rotors...nothing but squeaking, need help

Hawk ceramic pads? I installed mine and I thought mine made a lot of noise at first too. Especially when they were cold or when I came to a slow stop, dragging the brakes a little. I did notice an improvement after I installed them but I also installed braided lines and light weight rotors at the same time, too.

Barely hear anything now,not sure how many miles it took to quiet down but it was definitely more than 150 mi.

I don't have any advice other than wait it out a little more. Believe me,I know it's annoying but in my case it pretty much went away.

Re: new brakes and rotors...nothing but squeaking, need help

Hawk recommends that before bedding in the new pads you may have to bevel or shave the leading edge a bit at a 45* angle or so to prevent noise on certain rotors. Also, the bedding in process should be 8-10 HARD FAST 45-60mph stops, followed by a complete cool down to prevent noise and aid in function. Upgrading to a pad like Hawk or Porterfield is nothing like your typical pad like Akebono or EBC.

thank you all very much. I have already noticed a significant decrease in noise, so hopefully we will be in good standing soon.

as for the rotors...contact Patrick Bendicto 408-710-3037 @ bigfoot performance, tell em i sent you. great pricing and customer service. all rotors made to order and can come in different colors. i will post pics soon.

if you guys have any other tips or tricks, it would be much appreciated. I hope the noise goes away completely soon.

I dont think itll ever go away COMPLETELY from what ive heard ceramics are a bit noisier which is why i went with the HPS's. Im also interested in the rotors you went with although its more then likely the pads causing all the ruckus.

Id say put some serious heat into the pads, then let them cool, not by sitting but by braking easily and lightly. This has helped before, especially with new brakes.

    .
Drilled/Slotted rotors Squeak like a mofo...that is one of the many down sides.

Your not going to get it to go away that is normal. Over time it actuall gets worse. Search and you will see this is the number 1 complaint about cross drilled rotors. SLotted has less noise but still some.

+1 rep for being honest about not stopping better. Ive never seen any benifit other then looks wise on that for normal driving

Anti-rattle clips should be replaced any time you service the brakes.

    The German Tune-Up trick......

Actually I have cured squeaking brakes by doing this on more than one occasion but it will come back at some point.

    Cheers,
