Year end total of the cost of ownership of a used RS6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've owned my beast for about exactly a year now, and after retrieving it from the dealership this afternoon i went through my records to tally up what this car has cost myself and the warranty co. to keep on the road. ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?

    $28,346.58
And no, this doesn't include the purchase price, fuel, registration,or insurance, just repairs and maintenance. So for all of those kicking the idea around in their head, go pick up a used RS6, they're dirt cheap right now I still wouldn't trade it for the world.

WOW! thats dealer prices and some hefty repairs though.

I love that car but just after having my 2.7 I can tell you there is no chance I have the stomache (or pocket book anymore) for the RS6

how much of that price were repairs and not maintenance? what the hell happened to yoru car? I know maintenance can be a lot, but that seems very extreme so im assuming you had some major repairs(ill take a hunch at DRC or transmission). Also, how many miles were on your car when you bought it?

Im asking because Im gonna pick an rs6 up soon(along with fidelity platinum warranty), but that number freaks me out.

Research that fidelity company. You'll be shocked about what you find out. But if you really insist on throwing your money away, I'd happily take it from you.

You have Fidelity confused with Fidelis. Fidelity has a great warranty for the RS6, in fact I would say that 80% of the users on RS6.com use it. I personally have one through Zurich.

Wow V8, that is a hefty number. I think you have posted before on what problems you have had...any chance you could tell us again what made up that 28K so far?

This is a great thread BTW. People sometimes just see that buy in price, and lose track of real world cost. I'm sure this will help someone in the future.

I wouldn't get too worried about it. This is simply the total of all the receipts in my folder. I would say $6000 of that was out of pocket, but that includes the Kw's, swaybars, an extra set of wheels, winter tires, and regular maintenance. AOA paid for about $7000, which was the replacement of both downpipes under their 8 year emissions warranty, and the remaining $15000 was paid by my warranty.

This does not surprise me one bit as I spent $17.5k last year for my 2001 allroad.

Ive done plenty of searching. Which is why im shopping for an rs6 now. Go on rs6.com and most people swear by the fidelity warranty, and they also suggest to not buy the rs6 without one(unless you have a butt load of money). I dont consider it throwing my money away when it will 100% pay for itself over the life of the warranty even if it would cost $5k. My B5 A4 over almost 6 years cost me more than that, actually over $5k in just the first year when my timing belt tensioner failed and fubared my engine.....ive learned since then. you must be thinking something different from fidelity. The fidelity warranty is actually sold through audi as the audi pure protection program (or something very similar). I have heard about very bad experiences from 3rd party warranties though, so I appreciate the heads up.

I put about $2,000 parts and labor into my S6 (timing belt job, brakes, control arms). For what you dished out I could have put on the PES Supercharger with all the bells and whistles, a manual transmission swap and BBK. Don't get me wrong, they are uber cool and all but that's over the top.

You are correct, let it be a lesson to the folks throwing the idea around about purchasing one.

I've been tossing the idea in my head for some time. Fortunately for me nothing seriously has happened to my 4.2 (knock on wood). But, I am going to get one; I was wondering how much you all pay for your guys' warrenties? Do you find that dealerships normally have less of a problems with say Fidelity or AAA, or any others that you all may use? I do have some electrical work needed to be done soon, so I am not hoping this is not a precurser as to what is to come. I will bite the bullet on this elec work, but wanted your input on extended warrenties. OP, not trying to jack the thread, just asking while we are on the topic.

I agree Stampy! Thanks for the post V8weight! Most people would either be too embarrassed at the high cost. Or, too much of a fanboi to admit to it.

they have different ones available depending on mileage. Under 60k miles you can get a 5/60(5 year or 60k miles) for $4800. Over 60k mile, but under 75k you can get a 4/48 for around 3800. Ofcourse if you buy a car with under 50k or 40k they have longer warranties available. I just got the quotes for cars between 50 to 75k miles(but im looking at the lower end). I was just quoted last week, but he said the new year might bring in some higher prices.

All these quotes were for the platinum coverage which is the best warranty package.

I was curious so I did a search. At the bottom of this quote he lists some stuff that he had replaced. I'm tired so im not going to search what the coolank leak was about. The 02 sensors alone I read that you gotta pull the engine, that's a lot of $$ in labor right there.

Plan on a set of brake pads every year: minimum $250
New rotors every 2 years: $1300-1400
Timing belt every 35k miles: $1500-2500
    Oil change:$120 If you DIY
Spark plugs, air filters, cabin filter, fuel filter ever 20k miles: $350 if you DIY

These are just the things you plan on, I've had my torque converter, primary O2 sensors, secondary O2 sensors, both downpipes, blower motor, evap canister purge valve, and N75 valve replaced just in the past year, and currently have a substantial coolant leak coming from the rear of the motor. This car is not for the faint of heart.

There is a lot of confusion over this. It seems that in Europe they've revised the interval to 90k Km. or about 57k miles. But apparently the US cars still have to adhere to the "severe duty" interval of 35k miles. It doesn't really bother me, I do my own timing belts and I'll continue the 35k interval until Napa starts stocking RS6 pistons and rods.
