    Shaving tires necessary?

    Hi guys,

Looking for some help. Went to go put my stock titaniums on today in preparation for the winter and noticed I had a flat on one of them. Found out that the hole was in the sidewall and needed a completely new tire because it would be too dangerous to patch. So I was wondering if I would need to have the tread on the new tire shaved to match my other 3? I have read it can do quite a bit of damage if I dont, but my stock titaniums only have 5k miles on them (swapped to VMR 710s right after I purchased car). So my question is, will it really make much of a difference since my stocks are practically brand new? Or should I just get it shaved slightly. Thanks to anyone that can help.

nope should not make a difference, you should have searched before posting b/c i have seen atleast 3 thread about this. I forget the exact number, but i tihnk there cannot be more then a 5% tread dif between any of the given tires. you should be fine.

If they're almost new than I think you're fine.
I was told by Tire Rack that Audi recommends no more than a 4/32 difference between tires.

first and foremost - file a paper with NTHSA - there has been an ongoing problem with pirelli P6 developing sidewall damage.. and go to the dealer 5k miles on tires is nothing. I got my sidewall busted in 2500 miles and thats on nice roads. Do some research and get printout showing other people having same problem. P6's are just plain crap. its a fact. When they were on Volvo's there was a class action and people got their money back or tires replaced.
my car is still on AZ... someone else is just driving it (BMO).

4/32 (as noted above per Audi recommendation) is a pretty big difference so you should be more than ok with only 5K miles.

    Re: Shaving tires necessary?

The recommendation is actually no more than 3/32 if I remember correctly. Depending on the wear rating of the tire, you'd prob be ok, but it wouldn't hurt to get a tread gauge and just measure it out to make sure you're well within that range. I'm dealing with the same problem as I had a blowout over the weekend.

If need be, tire rack can shave tires too.

+1, with only 5k on your tires there shouldn't be too much wear. You should be ok

    Re: Shaving tires necessary?

Thanks for everyones help. Just placed an order in tirerack. I have more than enough tread and opted not to shave the tires.

Used this as a reference if anyone ever has to measure tire depth with coins:

    Very helpful.
